Hi, I made a thread about this already however I got no help. My PC just randomly restarts when gaming after a short period of time (20 minutes).

My specs: AMD Athlon X4 860K, GTX 970, 16GB DDR3, Asrock fm2a88m extreme4+
Temp: CPU is around 50C idle, and 65ishC while gaming.

No, I don't have access to another PSU
Yes, it is the older version of the CPU with the green writing.

I was hoping someone could help me confirm or deny whether the PSU is the issue

Thanks

Hello,

I would like to help you!

First off, a few questions.

Already reinstalled graphics drivers?
Full windows reinstall?
Checked any cables?
Re inplaced any cables?
Did you recently replace any parts?
Wich parts are the oldest?

If you could answer these questions ^^

Greetings

Hi Dion, thanks for responding! I have the latest graphics drivers
I have all the latest updates of windows 10
I replaced my power cable today (Unfortunately did not help)
I guess probably the PSU to be honest (Oldest part)

It's just to my knowledge 750w is MORE than enough for my requirements?
If a new PSU is the option, please recommend one so I can order it ASAP because I'm a big gamer and I can never get into a game because I never know when it's going to next crash

Hello.

To start, first reinstall your graphics, uninstall your graphics in device manager en reinstall it.
If that isn't working you can try to reinstall your full windows.
If this isn't helping you now know this: Its not your windows, clear.
Then you can start testing your hardware, ofcourse that takes to much time.
I know some ways to get around this and find the problem, but first thing you need to do is reinstall gpu drivers, see if its fixed same with windows.

Btw i dont thing its the Power supply.

Greetings DIon

Ok, currently in the process of reinstalling GPU drivers. How can I go about reinstalling Windows? I don't have a back up device. I do have both a SSD and a HDD though. My Windows is installed to my SSD (Obviously) Is there a way to back up on D drive, then clean install?

Thanks

Hello!
Did the GPU reinstall fixed your problem?
And you should have a Backup Device. Mega.nz gives 50GB cloud, maybe you could use this.
Because you need to do a full reinstall.
These are the first steps of finding the problem.
So let me know :D

You know, if the PC is restarting abruptly, without going to the BSOD. in my experience it only happens due to 2 things; Overheating or bad power.

Are you overclocking you CPU or RAM or GPU?

Before going towards a full Windows reinstall, I would recommend logging the temperatures of your CPU and GPU both, just to be sure that all temps are good.

If everything is in safe zone, open up your casing and change power cables with the spare ones if you have any in case your PSU is modular. If not, take it out and clean it thoroughly using a blower. Put it back and try gaming.

In most cases, this will solve the problem. Report back if it helps

The GPU reinstall didn't fix the problem. Mega.nz really doesn't like me dropping my windows folder in, so I'm going to buy a cheap USB stick from eBay. I'll order this, and back up, the re-install my Windows. Please don't lose track of this thread though, I really need your help as you're the only one who seems to be knowledgeable.

All the best, Hootla

I mentioned before, but to be more accurate the minimum my CPU goes to when idle is 30C, the maximum when gaming is 70C I believe the PC restarts (Cuts out) when it hits 70C as a safety pre-caution.

I'm not overclocking any of the above. I have already bought a new power cable and that did not fix it.

Hello!

Yes indeed, this was my second step! Sorry for late response, not getting notified by this topic :S
Now you reinstalled you GPU, the windows reinstall isn't needed. So we go to next step,
We can do 2 things
Prevent it from getting 70C. Replacing cooling paste, or see if fan is spinning harder when gaming, if it isn't we could do this.

Second thing, put the "safety" mark higher, so it won't shut down at 70C.

I can help you this, maybe if you got skype or something like that, let me know ^^

In a nutshell, if there is a software corruption, you get BSOD. If you have a hardware problem however, your system restarts abruptly.

If you are not getting BSOD that means you don't have any software issue. Meaning you don't need to reinstall Windows.

As far as I remember, the maximum temp for 860k is 70ish, maybe your system is restarting automatically to prevent any damage due overheating.

Just to be sure, download AMD Overdrive and check the Thermal Margin during gaming. If its 5 or lower, than the restart is definitely due to heating.

You can disable the automatic restart in the BOIS of your motherboard, although it is not recommended as this will cause the processor to go beyond the safety limits which, in turn, may damage your system.

Other than this, try upgrading to an aftermarket liquid cooler like Corsair H80 etc and use good thermal paste between the cooler and the processor. This will help keeping the maximum temp in the range of 60-65 C under load and solve your problem.

Hope this has helped.

UPDATE

Hello, since we last spoke I have taken apart my heatsink and CPU, cleared all of the dust and excess around it, replaced it with fresh thermal compound and the temperatures are around 5C lower when gaming. I get around 65C now instead of 70C. However, it just crashed again, when it was at 65C, it lasts a lot longer when I play Overwatch, but when I play Steep it doesn't last very long at all (I assume it's just a more demanding game) Btw, for faster replies, my Skype is:lukeishere777

Thanks
