Hi i am new to this site my friend told me that this site is very professional . So i will start to explain my issue i have a core i7 4790k 4ghz boost to 4.4ghz 16gb ram gskills trident x 2400mhz cl11 and my motherboard is an asus maximus hero vi z87 graphic card gtx 1080 oc edition asus strix in sli .
Okay here is how my problem start as i have the z87 maximus vii hero i was able to overclock my 4790k to 4.8ghz it was running my os windows 10 anniversary edition and was able to run benchmark test from cpu-z , aida64 and xtm ultility i was able to play big games on that 4.8ghz rise of tomb raider crysis 3 far cry 4 etc etc . But the 4.8ghz wasnt able to run any stress test without crashing (blue screen ) refering to my friends that have experience in that the 4.8 ghz wasnt stable so i have to down it to 4.7ghz where it was finally stable on all test for a long period of time .

Then after reading forums and articles about the devil canon 4790k i saw some peoples saying that overclock performance will improve if i swap from z87 to z97 mainboard . So i decided to try it and replace my maximus hero vi z87 with 4.7ghz stable at 1.285v watercool with h115i corsair at 62 degrees for a ASUS MAximus vii ranger z97 board when i was getting lastest bio online on official asus site at https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_RANGER/HelpDesk_Download/ i saw what people was talking on the site (MAXIMUS VII RANGER BIOS 0809
1.Enhance compatibility for new Anniversary Edition and Devil's Canyon CPU.
2.Optimize overclocking function and performance for new Anniversary Edition and Devil's Canyon CPU.
3.Revise function description of SVID support item.
) included in the new bios update i was getting hype as my target for replacing z87 to z97 and expectation was 4.9ghz or maybe 5ghz it will be nice .
But sadly it didnt event overclock to 4.5ghz on that maximus ranger vii z97 board the os (windows 10) is not event booting without bluescreen cant anyone please help me and explain why is this happening to me btw my power supply is a evga 850 w certified platinium edition Please answer me only if u know what u are talking about no need to waste time arguing on which person know better thats not my goal here if u can help please do THANKS ALL

That's really unusual, I would expect the same thing, really.

But it sort of contradicts its self, its sort of expecting every CPU to OC to 5GHz, which is understandable, as every motherboard will taking overclocking in its own way and will need a specific voltage for specific CPU to get a specific clock speed.

This is the way I see it anyway, you could try increasing the voltage up to around 1.4V, as it will not do major damage to your CPU as long as your cooling is sufficient, and with the H115i you should be fine? What was the highest voltage you used?

It is also recommended that you reinstall Windows from scratch when doing a hardware upgrade such as motherboards, this is due to the fact that it is a chipset change (Not much but still true) from Z87 to Z97.

If I was you, I'd just swap motherboards back and clock back to the 4.7 you were at.

yea i have screenshot but i cant figure out how to post photo here so on the z87 i was getting 4.8ghz with 1.360v temperature of 61 degrees with 17% performance gain then i try on the 4.9ghz at 1.456v with 68degree with 19% performance gain was able to bench test only but gamming was possible but as i listen to my friend i downclock to 4.7ghz with 1.285 v 15% performance gain with 60 degrees and stable with the corsair h115i but i am very dissapointed with that z97 vii ranger rog board from asus that cant event handle a single 4.5ghz i spend money on it beeing confident reaching 4.9 easy i still cant understand why it cant handle there must be something wrong i dont know and i tried to up my voltage up to 1.460 v on the vii ranger but the 4.5ghz low overclock was still not able to load the os
i know its sound weird and strange but this is the situation i have been undergo

Yeah I understand you.

I doubt that it is anything major, as your CPU can boot with 4.7-4.9GHz overclock on your older board, but maybe it can just communicate much better with that board if you know what I mean.

You can always return that other motherboard if you wish and stick with the Z87.

No doubt the BIOS versions are completely different between the 2 motherboard, which could also cause an issue

Yeah :/ It's basically the top-end model of motherboards from what I can tell, and it really sucks that it isn't giving you the performance you're wanting.

You could always RMA it as faulty as it isn't living to your expectations just to see if it was the motherboard, but I doubt it'll do much. Just RMA it saying it is underperforming, really all you can do and hope you get a motherboard that allows a greater overclock.
