Dear staff and good peoples of Tom's Hardware,

I've got a DellOptiplex 740 SFF and I'm looking to upgrade/install a new graphics card on it. Would be nice to have a HDMI port on it so can connect it to TV to serve as home theatre unit.

I know the PSU is low power (275w) and the new card will have to be a low profile model.

Everything except RAM in the system is stock, the only upgrade I have installed so far is 8gig RAM in 2gig sticks across four bays.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm in the UK and my budget is around £160 for the card.

Specs are:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 2.6ghz
RAM: 8 GB 667Mhz (2GB per channel)
PSU: 275w

Many thanks and merry X-Mas 2016

you could try a gt 710 lo pro but then you just don't know if the dell proprietary bios will support it

kinda funny that from the deel link I gave the gt710 showed Optiplex 740 DT Optiplex 740 MT but NOT a SFF ???

this is why I never recommend upgrades for prebuilts and try to warn about these things with a lot of them before some one goes out and spends money to find in the end there left holding the bag

dell, hp. acer and the rest of the prebuilt guys there in to selling whole ready to go computers and don't card too much about you doing any upgrades .. they rather you just go buy there newest latest ..

in the end any upgrade you do is all your own risk dell only guarantees there computers work as sold...

something like that , but then the 740 sff is still not listed under the Compatibility list. also that card is a 19w card I believe

[ Thermal and Power Specs: ]

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-710/specifications

heres a list of NVidia cards from dell and just check what dell shows under compatible

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?k=nvidia&c=us&category_id=7566&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&~ck=anav&p=2&sort=price&dgc=BA&cid=306033&lid=5794655&acd=123092276202786738c101156640&ven3=114603439655788189

then if you try a newer release card like a 900 or 10 series cad you have to worry if the dell proprietary bios will allow or support any of them some find there prebuilts bios may not allow a card over say NVidia 600 series

my disclaimer

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

Thank you both for the replies:

So had a chat with Dell and they recommended the following card as the fastest/most powerful compatible card:

VisionTEK
Radeon 5450 SFF 1GB DDR3 3M (DVI-I, DP, VGA)
Manufacturer Part# 900315
Dell Part# A3642310

Or I could try this card with the chance it might not work (unless I void the warranty and change the bios)

PNY GeForce VERTO GT 710 - Graphics card - GF GT 710 - 2 GB DDR3 - PCIe 2.0 x8 low profile - DVI, D-Sub, HDMI - black
Manufacturer part: VCGGT7102XPB
Dell part: A9004425

Any thoughts on which I should buy?

I don't think it has to be a pny brand just the model is all like asus or evga what ever just gt 710 is the main thing [but then each card from the manufacture does have there own bios on the card and I guess that could come in to play ?? ]
