SLI with MSI GTX 980 and EVGA GTX 980?? Is this a good idea at all?

What are the downsides vs the benefits? I have a 2560x1440p 60hz monitor which I will be upgrading soon to an IPS-panel 2560x1440p 144hz, but there is a good chance that I will be staying with the former (haven't saved up enough for a new monitor..).

Also, is $200 a fair price for the EVGA gtx 980 SC if its still under warranty? The card is in very good shape.

I apologize beforehand if I've left any pertinent info that would help in answering the question.

Thank you

if you can get a 1080 for 500 i would probably go with that option. I hear a lot of people complain about SLI , plus SLI is only useful in games that support it anyway. and the 1080 should do really well with your 1440p especially when you eventually upgrade to 1440p 144hz (whenever that is).

although you probably only need a 1070 if you are able to get one of those for 300-400 . but a 1080 is pretty nice so :D

i believe you can do that but i think itd be better to try to sell yours for 200 and buy a 1070 and avoid all SLI issues.

otherwise, yes, i think 200 is a pretty good price

Can I mix and match graphics cards from different manufacturers?
Using 180 or later graphics drivers, NVIDIA graphics cards from different manufacturers can be used together in an SLI configuration. For example, a GeForce XXXGT from manufacturer ABC can be matched with a GeForce XXXGT from manufacturer XYZ.

Thank you for the quick response. I have two offers in front of me right now: GTX 980 SLI or keep the MSI GTX I currently have, sell it like you recommended, and buy a STRIX GTX 1080 for $500.

I'm assuming your suggestion is to go with the latter?

did you look to see what may offer better ? I do prefer a strong single card over SLi and lately NVidia been jacking so much around with its support of things with SLI makes it a bit less appealing more and more . I did SLI ''once'' .

as long as you don't have any hardware or software compatibility issue that could pop up with the 10 series cards [don't look like you do unlike me ] I feel just grab a nice gtx 1070/ 80 and let it rock [opinion]

good luck
