Like the title says, do plug and play routers exist? By plug and play, I don't mean like i plug it into an ethernet port of a router then I can use the device as an AP. I literally mean like I plug it into the wall for power and it will create an AP that I can connect to. Thanks.

Solution

Many companies make "travel router" just for that purpose. Here is one such devices.

As an "AP", it would need to get its signal from something.
What are you thinking it will connect to?

Nothing but a wall.

Still not sure of what you are trying to do, but if you plug a 'router' into the wall, you can connect to it from a PC or laptop. It will provide a WiFi signal.
Can't do much else, but you can connect to it.

Yes. thats what I want to do. id like to plug it into a wall, it will provide internet access for me. whether it is ethernet and I have to plug a device into it, or I plug it into a wall and it itself will act as an access point where I can connect my phone to it or something.

Edit: and yes, if I wanted something like this I can just buy a router. But I would like something portable, for travel. For example, I can be at the airport and if I wanted secure internet access i can plug this certain device in the wall (for power) then i can connect to it whether it's ethernet or Wifi.

Doing that will not provide 'internet access'. That has to come from 'somewhere'.
Normally, that is an ISP(Internet Service Provider). That you pay money to. Monthly.
You pay them, they provide a signal to your house.

In some locations there is 'free' internet access. Generally provided by your local govt or college (if you are a student).

Alright. But one more question. I was looking at this item on amazon where you plug it into a router via ethernet and it'll provide an access point to connect to. Say I'm at the airport. If i connected this to a LAN line or any random ethernet port in the wall, would it provide internet access?

If you're at the airport, you probably have a laptop.
If you have a laptop, it has builtin WiFi.
The airport provides free WiFi internet access.
Simply connect to that, via the WiFi apparatus built into the laptop.

Well no shit man. I don't connect to public APs. And you shouldn't too. That's why I want a 'portable' router that will provide my own secure AP.
