Hi, my computer keeps freezing and the SSD and hard drives go to 100% all of a sudden. I've tried pretty much method out there to try and stop this, things like:
Disabling some services
Changing the system paging file size
Complete reinstall of windows
Checking hard drive health (For things like bad sectors)
Changing chrome settings (Like disabling flash)
Switching the power and SATA connectors
Enabling AHCI mode for windows 10
Checking the event log to see for any errors
Checking for firmware update on Sandisk SSD dashboard
Checking TRIM is enabled
Changing power mode to high performance
Reset the Winsock Catalog
Updated Video Drivers

Image of Task manager when freeze is occurring(Sometimes it's just the C drive 100%ing and sometimes the E drive does it too): https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cy2_mQAWQAEas0a.jpg:large

My system: AMD FX-8350
8GB DDR3
GTX 1060 6GB
Gigabyte 970A-UD3P
Win 10 64 bit
C drive is An SSD : Sandisk ultra ii 120gb:

E: drive is a blue WD 1tb 7200rpm

F: drive is a blue WD 1tb 7200rpm (^Same as above)

Any ideas of what to do next would be helpful.

Note: Zooming in and out like crazy on google maps to make it load new areas is one thing that triggers the 100%ing If that helps)

Thanks,
Kieran

Hey there, @TheStagGamer!

Kudos for the amazing job you have done so far with the troubleshooting! However, I'd recommend you also check your motherboard manufacturer's official website for any SATA controller & Chipset driver updates for your mobo. Sometimes Windows Updates tend to install a bit outdated and more generic drivers while configuring the updates. Another thing that could also influence the 100% HDD usage is a software or some system file. Have you checked the Resource monitor in Windows as well?
The spikes might also be coming from a failed connectivity to the drives, so I'd also advise you to swap the SATA cables with different ones and also check how the SSD and the WD Blue (E: ) will perform from a different SATA III ( 6 Gb/s) port on the mobo.

Hope these steps help you. Let me know how it goes, though. :)

Complete fresh install of windows 10, and I don't call having this issue when I previously ran windows 7 before 10 was available

Cheers for the help.
Although I've switched around the SATA cables and what ports are in use I have a very limited selection. 3/6 of my SATA ports on my motherboard can do longer be used to damage. I assumed that the others were fine as data could be sent through them and so I'm using the remaining 3 now. Sounds like some damage could be done to those too then? Although there are no immediate signs that they're not fully working

Will be able to get a screenshot later of the processes tab when it's happening, but I do know that it does not show high disk usage by any programs at the time

I have a gigabyte 970A-UD3P motherboard so would I download @BIOS (AMD FM2+/AM3+ series)?

Hey there again, @TheStagGamer!

If 3 out of the 6 SATA ports on your mobo have already failed, then I'd strongly recommend you consider checking the warranty. I suspect that if the issue is hardware-related to the mobo, you should definitely RMA it and get a replacement from the manufacturer's or the reseller's customer support. If you do need to update any of the drivers or the BIOS version, please refer to the motherboard manual from the official website.

To rule out a software-related issue as a last resort, you could try re-installing the OS onto the SSD from scratch. Just make sure you unplug all secondary drives from the motherboard at the time of the installation, otherwise you would probably encounter the so-called OS confusion.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Did the other sata ports work before? Could also be that theyre disabled in bios. Not everything is broken what's not working!
And the problem appeared when windows 10 was installed. Everything ran fine with 7. So it may can be a problem with 10 and/or settings!

Unfortunately, the warranty on the motherboard has run out by now, so it would mean purchasing a new one if it came to it. I have already tried putting a clean install of windows on the SSD with no luck but I may try it again. As for the drivers; I'll give them a shot when I back at my computer.

Thanks,
Kieran

All the SATA ports worked before half of them broke. The ports of the motherboard were damaged in transit when I was moving my PC, and I've tried to go through the settings that the internet has told me too with little luck :( Maybe there's one that I'm missing somewhere though.

What do you mean MSI graphics drivers to Nvidia graphics drivers? Do you mean going from the ones on the disk that the GPU came with to the most recent one online?
(I have the "Palit Dual Edition" 1060 BTW)

Alright, so the way this works, vastly simplified, is that Nvidia writes drivers and shortly afterwars 3rd party developers (such as MSI in my case and Palit in your case) bring out their own driver versions for their specific hardware.
Generally this is better as their card is mostly the Nvidia card, but with specific bells and whistles.
So 3rd party drivers differ slightly, but usually not significantly, from the Nvidia ones.

In my case, there was something in the added code for the MSI specific one that seemed to have caused . . . . a virtual memory leak? . . . that caused it to use my disc for 100%. I am not sure of this as I have not gone back and tested everything, it was certainly the last variable I changed, but I went through most of the steps you have posted in your original post as well (you may want to turn off superfetch and windows search as well btw) so that may have been a factor.

Anyway, your Palit driver will be different from the Nvidia one, and if you still have the one from the box you will want to update that thing anyway, and if there is a . . . . virtual memory leak (again, who knows what was wrong with mine). . . . problem with your box-drivers updating them to the latest drivers/changing to Nvidia ones may help.

Ground rule of drivers: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Well, mine broke after Windows did that anniversary update. Maybe yours did too.

I believe I started having the issues after the anniversary update too. I never installed the drivers off of the disk from Palit and have always used the most recent drivers through GeForce experience. I could try to download the Palit VGA Drivers from there and see if that has any effect. Nothing to loose if I try it I suppose :)

Thanks for the help!
