I'm looking to build a gaming PC for around 400$ (minus the cost of a case and a HDD) and I need a good CPU for about 100$. Is the i3-6100 the best at this price or is there better? Thanks!

Even tho the suggestion of going FX is decent, that platform is dead now, so you will have no upgrade path whatsoever. You would have to rebuild it all again whenever you wish to upgrade.
And Intel's Skylake i3 CPUs can match even the 8xxx or 9xxxx AMD CPUs. As you're going for gaming and not Rendering, therefore you don't need the extra cores, you need single core performance, which in this case, the i3 is absolutely better.

If you can spend a little more than $400 you can have this:

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($104.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($53.98 @ Newegg)...

Good luck finding a decent Intel CPU under $100. The I3 is okay, but surely won't be the best "gaming" option. Personally, I'd make the switch to AMD for a budget PC build. The FX 6300 (ive used before) is probably the BEST CPU for the money. Think about it, 6 cores for $100 with AMD or 4 cores for $200+ with Intel. AMD=Perfect for budget.

No, I'm not an AMD fanboy, ; ) I currently use an I5-4690k but have used the FX-6300 in the past.

It definitely isn't the optimal build for gaming, but should handle medium settings at 60+ fps and have a much smoother upgrade path in the future.

Now that I think of it, yes, the I3 is a better choice than the FX 6300 I recommended. I never really believed in the whole "I3 for budget gaming" topic. Now that I've done more research, that is one killer CPU for the budget. I mean, the FX 6300 is $100 for 6 "not-so-good" cores, while the I3 is $100 for 2 great cores w/ hyperthreading. Definitely go I3

What about the FX-8300? Its in my budget and from what I've seen, a bit better then the i3-6100 for the same price. Is it still not worth it because of the upgrade-ability? Thanks!

Good CPU, but overall not ready for the newest games. If you get the i3, and find a game that it runs poorly with, you can upgrade to an I5 or an I7 when you want. With the FX 8300, there isnt much you can upgrade to.

Those benchmarks are not really good to begin with as they aren't realist. Always check for FPS benchmarking
Overall, using all cores the 8300 would perform better, (ideally).

But that's not the case in games, as they don't are optimized to benefit from multiple cores, instead they focus on one core.
That way, for gaming 1 strong core is much better than 8 weak cores.

IMO it still not worth at all going AMD right now. If you want to, you might wait up a bit for Zen, their promise is to keep cost at down, while providing decent amount of performance. But it's a gamble, as you will have to wait it to come out to be sure if they'll meet the promise.
