Hello and Good day! im just planning to buy a new graphics card in my pc, so im just wondering if the nvidia cards will be fully compatible with my mobo? asrock 970 ex3 r2.0 and i want to use a gtx 1060. thanks in advance.

Solution
That's a very old motherboard with PCIe V2.0 slots. The newer cards (a few generations now) are PCIe 3.0. While in theory they should be compatible, it's definitely not "fully" and there may be edge cases where PCIe 3.0 cards don't work in PCIe 2.0 slots.

There arehowever, no issues with Nvidia cards in AMD boards in general.

There are no situations where PCIe 3.0 cards do not work in PCIe 2.0 slots due to the PCIe version. Now some Dells and HPs have problems with PCIe 3.0 cards but its due to their BIOS not the PCIe version.

Now that said PCIe 1.0 can sometimes have issues with 3.0 cards, this was mostly cleared up with PCIe 1.1

Thanks for the reply man I really appreciate it, one more thing, im planning for the asus strix 1060 oc do you think there will be no problem with that?

There will be no problem with any 1060.

The only issue is that with a stock clocked amd fx chip at less than 4ghz you will not push max performance from any 1060.

As long as you do not expect 60fps+ all the time on every single title available you will be fine.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate the brief explanation, so it means, if I go with asus strix 1060 oc with my board 970 extreme 3, there will be no issue?

Correct it will definitely work.

In your case the only issue for you is that CPU is a bit weak and may bottleneck some CPU intensive games.
