Ethernet port not working

Hi everyone. I finished building my first computer last night and got windows 10 on it no issues, so I had a few questions. I had everything running fine without the video card (gtx 1070) installed. Once I had put in the card, the monitor would not recognize any of the hdmi ports from the card or from the motherboard io. Is that because I need to install the drivers onto the storage before putting the card in, or could that be something else? The other main issue is that the ethernet port that is in my room doesn't want to register the cord to my computer and give me the internet. It is a cat5e plus port. I was wondering if you had any ideas why it wouldn't work. It works in the other ethernet port in my office, but doesn't want to register on this one in my room. Could the port in my room not be hooked up/wired to the router for some reason? This is limiting me from installing all the drivers and accessing the internet. Thanks

Solution

yes, and would prove if you plug that same computer into the wall plug that doesn't give you internet.... the wall plug being a failure point....

If your desktop works with one ethernet port and not another, it's not your computer, it's that port. If the wall port in your room isn't working, make sure that that port's cable is connected to the router on the other end. Otherwise, you'll have to use wifi or, a better solution, powerline adapters.

Do you have a laptop, printer or other Ethernet device you can plug into that port to test it? If the other device doesn't work the port is not active. That could be caused by something as simple as it not being plugged into the switch/router at the other end. If it is a managed switch that particular port could be disabled by whoever is managing the switch.

The OP already tested the computer in another room and it works, so we've ruled out the computer as the point of failure.

This is YOUR PLACE. If you have to ask this question, I wager my lunch money that jack is not enable.

This is limiting me from installing all the drivers and accessing the internet.
Don't let this silly thing stop your build, move it to somewhere u can get a connection if you have to. Of course seasoned builders have all necessary drivers downloaded from Mobo's vendor to a USB dongle even BEFORE commence build.
