story time!

did a computer overhaul, got a new CPU, motherboard, and GPU all at once and spent a day installing. loads of fun (sortof). out of the box, plugging it all in, and going with my OS loaded on my harddrive it all worked. until i noticed some problems and after a pc reset was prompted to a heat warning and had to let it cool down in a power down state before resuming my os. with some digging, it turns out my new cpu was running at a bit of an overclock of 4308MHz so a 1% load is capping it at a nice 95-100 degrees celsius and it's only not going over because NOW it will throttle due to its TJ max being at 100 (when each core hits 100 it instantly cools down because it throttle down and i dont have a crud cooler).

ive checked to see if it was bad paste application or paste. nope on both parts + each core is within 5 degrees of each other at any 1 time. its also not faulty sensors as it feels hot after i power down and feel around the area and done a realtemp sensor test + over periods of time im running into cpu related program fault problems. ive looked it up some fixes. anything to change BIOS settings have no effect of ANY kind, the second windows (10) loads up it maxes out the power and climbs to a nice 90+. ive also tried manually installing all new motherboard and cpu related drivers and no dice.

the only fixes from people with similar problems (that i haven't tried) are either:
- reinstall windows (according to someone with almost the same cpu and this problem on the intel forums)
- returning the cpu AND motherboard (according to these (toms hardware) forums, but different hardware)

in all fairness, might return them both anyway as there's possible symptoms im having other problems wiht the motherboard, and reinstall windows when i get them back if its still doing it. just wanted to know if anyway has seen this before and ha some golden fix im absolutely missing?

hardware in question. I7 6700k CPU, Asus Z170-P D3 Socket ATX Motherboard.

UPDATE:
downloaded coretemp on behalf of tom's hardware admin recommendation on another 6700k problem. same readings on temp per core compared to realtemp. but. its maxing out at 4000MHz and throttling down to 3000 when the temp hits 100. and voltage is between 1v and 1.2v... overall cpu power consumption is 20w or over. dunno if nay of this info is helpful.

cooling is arctic freezer 13. and im not in a hot climate either.

Solution
Almost certain this is bad CPU cooling, either thermal paste, badly seated cooler or both. Seriously, start from scratch and apply a tiny amount of fresh thermal compound.

take a look at this

dont think id be that cuz all the individual core temps are within a few degrees but i guess i couldn't hurt to give ti a shot tomorrow afternoon. not like the thermal paste came in a giant syringe full of it. ill get back here after wiht the results and/or to see if anyone else has posted any solutions.

Your motherboard requires low voltage DDR3 ram. That is 1.35v or less.
Likely all sorts of problems and damage to your processor will occur if you tried to use 1.5v ram from a previous build.

If you can, return the motherboard in favor of one using DDR4 ram and buy a compatible ddr4 ram kit 2400 speed is fine.
Otherwise buy a low voltage ram kit.
Hopefully, your processor was not damaged.

How is your case cooling?
What is your graphics card?

Any cooler needs a source of fresh air to do it's job.

I think you need a better cooler than the ts with it's puny 92pp fan. It is no better than an intel stock cooler.
Look for a cryorig H7 or scythe kotetsu each about $35 with 120mm fans.
They will run quieter too.

just checked, i am running low voltage (1.35V) ram. Crucial 16GB kit (2x 8GB )DDR3. good thing too as its £100 for 16gb of ddr4 let alone the motherboard.

and ill remount my cooler befor i go and spend another 30+ on a new fan since its nothing at all to remount.

(and even though your saying ym cooler is only a bit better then an intel stock. an intel stock should still be able to cool its cpu when running at less then 10% load.)

case cooling itself is meh but it has good ventilation so ive compensated by using externals + keeping my room at a low temp (dont mind dressing warm). and graphics card (new) is a Nvidia Armor 1070.

why didnt you buy ddr4 ram for this board for the price you paid . well anyway it could be the cpu cooler try the stock cpu cooler that cam with it. ino it is a k version of cpu but have you done any overclocking try going into bios and doing a factory default settings f10 i thinks it is that will load factory settings just incase anything happened

go to your BIOS and disable multi-core enhancement and then check if the cpu core voltage is set to auto, if yes then set the voltage to 1.35V instead of auto. in auto mode the motherboard bios can apply unnecessarily higher amount of voltage which can increase temperatures.

FIXED NOW!

stripped screws in the amd to intel conversion kit i got from arctic (my cooler manufacturer) for my cooler meant it wasn't even on!would've returned it but an excess amount of zip ties means its now more secured to the mount then any number of the tiny little fyew mm screws they expected to hold anyway would have.

also to much thermal paste, like, allot, redone that as well. the things not even cured yet and it holds 30 min and 70 max under some tests ive run.

thanks.

from what i have read on the net, temperatures below 80c are safe for a K CPU
