Attempting to retrieve data from old HD crashes system

Hi all.

Recently my laptop went kaput. It's a four year old acer aspire, and I'm not certain what went wrong. Pretty sure it was some physical component. I tried fixing it, and think I may have messed it up further.

Anyways, there were a few pictures I wanted to get off the hard drive. I purchased this product to do so: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQJME7Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

However, whenever I plug in the old hard drive via that device, I'm unable to open the hard drive, or open any other programs at all! I downloaded a few good data recovery tools, but whenever I have the hard drive plugged in, then my system for all intents and purposes stops working. I can't open the drive and I can't open any programs. If I try to close Windows Explorer, it stops working, and aside from a hard reboot I can't do anything with my machine.

I know that the USB connector is fine because I had another old hard drive that I tested it on and it worked fine. I plugged it in, and it came up immediately, and I was able to access my old files.

So clearly there is something wrong with this hard drive, and I'm not sure how to proceed. Any tips?

Hey there, @davidfett!

Unfortunately, it sounds like the HDD you are trying to retrieve the data from has completely failed. :( The fact that it makes the system unresponsive when it tries to read the contents on the HDD means that you might have better luck contacting a professional data recovery company, since the files are so important to you! They would be your best bet on getting them back. You could also contact the hard drive manufacturer's customer support for any specific data recovery company referrals but keep in mind that doing these attempts by yourself could potentially do more harm than good, especially if the damage is physical (hardware-related). Maybe you could also consider using a Ubuntu Live CD and if...

Maybe you could also consider using a Ubuntu Live CD and if that doesn't help either, there's nothing you can do by yourself, really.

In the future, make sure you always keep at least two copies of your files stored in different locations (drives). Having duplicates on-site as well as off-site is what will prevent the consequences of data loss from occurring again.

Best of luck! Hope I was helpful.
