I heard somewhere that there is no DDR4 quad channel for skylake cpus/motherboards. if i were to buy a 4x4GB kit of ddr4 and put all four in the two dual channels on a z170 would that have the same performance or would i just be better off buying a 2x8GB? if there actually is a quad channel z170 board? i have no issue with 2x8Gb but i just personally wanted the 4x4Gb kit instead. Thanks

Z170 is dual channel. If there are 4 DIMMS then you can run dual channel mode with 2 matched sticks in either one or both channels. Slot 1 and 3 will be a match and slots 2 and 4 will be matched. So you can have 2 x 8GB in slots 1 and 3 and 2 x 4GB in slots 2 and 4 and still be dual channel. So either 2 or all 4 slots have to be populated for dual channel mode to work.
