Hi,
I am a scientist who is doing image analysis. Our software is dumb and doesn't take advantage of multi core processors. So I am looking for the best configuration that gives single thread computations while having access to the fastest memory chips available. I got the impression that core i7 4790 is the best candidate but I am not sure and also not sure what the best board for it.
Any info would be appreciated

Fastest single threaded, without overclocking, would be a Skylake 6700k. Intel is supposed to release an i3 7350k, which should be quite fast, and a good deal cheaper.
For the fastest memory, you may want to go with a CPU that supports DDR4. The 4790 is a great CPU, but it will be limited to DDR3. The i7 6700k is probably better. Supposedly the next generation of CPUs should be available in January with a minor speed bump also.
I would look for a z170 board with the i7 6700k. Even if you don't overclock the CPU, it may be helpful to have an overclocking board to be able to run RAM at it's highest supported speed.
