Screen blacks out (not always black) at random

Hi, out of a sudden, at random occasions, my screen blacks out entirely (not always black, sometimes it's grey, red or icy blue so far) sometimes it happened after trying to launch games, sometimes it happens while the PC is completely idle, once it happened second after the the desktop screen appeared following boot, sometimes it doesn't happen for an entire day! i don't know what it is either my GPU or my Monitor unless something else can cause this...

And sadly do not have any other of the same components to try and narrow wich is the malfunctioning one

i have a GTX 780 and a LG Ultrawide 2560x1080@60Hz

i hope someone can shed a light on this, i can still use the PC but the fact i can be interrupted at anytime and have to force manual reboot through the button and its not cool. Also, that fact made me think that possibly is the GPU cuz i assume if it was the monitor the PC itself would still respond and i can reboot or turn off the PC using the keyboard only without looking at the screen and i cannot do such a thing when it happens cuz nothing responds, once, the screen went back to normal but all was freeze'd not even task manager was of help..

Again, hope someone knows what's going on...
i don't know much about this kind of stuff so, i'd appreciate if you were simple in your response...

Thanks in advance for sparing some time to help me out

#Edit; Idk if this is relevant or not but my GPU's power (seen through HWMonitor) is usually at the 30's or 40's % and goes up to 80's or 90's % whenever i'm playing a demanding game but ever since this issue started sometimes i noticed it reaching low levels as 3-7% ...

Just a random thought, but have you checked your case and video card for dust build up? It could be behaving this way due to overheating. Do you ever get "artifacts" when playing games? Weird graphical anomalies that just aren't supposed to be there?

If it's not that, then I'd say the most likely culprits are either your PSU or your video card. Not being able to swap out components means that you'll be playing a guessing game. My first guess would be overheating, or a bad GPU. However, the power fluctuations you're seeing might indicate a bad PSU.

There's is a bit of dust but minor... i indeed had overheating issues in the past, or rather i still have, for some reason my GPU's temperaute rises to 59-64C when completely idle, like, no program opened whatsoever... to counter this i downloaded MSI Afterburner cuz my FAN's stuck at 35% regardless of my GPU temp, so with it i have it running at 60% at all times that mitigated a good deal of the heating, since it worked well i ended up forgettin' about the issue... No. i do not get any graphical anomalies while playing games. All's perfectly fine on that regard. I understand, the power unit or my video card... like you said, a freakin' guessing game... but, if only those 2 are capable of creating such an issue i could find a way of getting an used, same model gpu and power unit to do some testing... i'll wait for more suggestion on the issue so i'm more informed, thanks for your reply! really appreciated

Hmm I'm concerned that you have to manually override your GPUs fan speed. That's not normal and may indicate problems with the GPU. It's also of concern that you're hitting ~60C at idle. I wouldn't dismiss overheating just yet. Try getting a utility like Speedfan and take a look at not only your GPU, but the ambient case temp and other components like the CPU.

the PC is now becoming sluggish, took me about 3min to open HWMonitor and check things. It showed 0.00% power for the GPU all other components appearing to be just fine... it was SUPER slow nothing was freeze'd just very, very slow... i had to fight through it to finish something... after about 10-15mins more or less i was given a error, something along the lines of = "Nvidia Driver Kernel Mode stopped responding and recovered itself" after that everything was back to normal. the slugishness was gone. checked HWMonitor GPU power was at about 7-11% ... anyone knows what this means?

thanks.

You don't mention it, but does your CPU have an integrated GPU? You could try switching to integrated graphics for a few days and see if the same problems crop up. If it continues to be slow and freezing up then you know it's not the GPU.

@imrazor

ma fraid my CPU do not have it..

Situation's gotten worse tho, i stop getting issues like before, slugishness and screen black out at different colors, now the GPU don't even recognize drivers anymore, the screen is all stretched out as if there is no driver installed at all like when you enter safe mode...

I think my GPU's given up... i'm making some arrangements to see if can buy gtx1070 + a new 800w PSU... good thing cuz i've had problems with this GPU for a long time but only now that it started to affected me directly...

I can still use the PC but can't do anything that require either OpenGL or Direct X for obvious reason, which is what i most use as a person who play games constantly..

So, since the culprits were most likely my GPU or PSU and my current PSU is not enough for a gtx1070, i can hit 2 birds with one stone. Also i'll need a slightly bigger case, but i suppose it can't be helped...
