Hello Tom's Hardware! I need your help on a fresh Windows 7 SP1 install.
I have two problems (one of which I found an excellent sticky to assist me).
The first one is that Windows Update keeps hanging, but I'm going to try out a series of suggestions in the top of the forum. The second problem is that (link to pictures included) svchost.exe is a massive resource hog! I can't have that on a computer with an ATI HD 4250 and an Athlon II x2 235e processor. When I push Go to Services on the process, it show me a bunch of Windows services. Who's the culprit? Any common ones?

Solution
You may be looking for windows updates which is quite cpu intensive.

It normally kicks off every day.
I have turned off check for windows updates and only run it whenever it is convenient for me to actually do updates.
Windows hates me, but it works for me.
One reason for my hesitancy in going to windows 10.

for me it is ALWAYS wsus.
1 core full bore and a quarter of my ram for windows freaking update for hours at a time never ending, it was enough to drive me to linux for my daily driver.

go to Run, type services.msc in the box and hit enter, give permission and look down the list for windows upate services and stop/disable the service and see if that was the issue.
if your consumption issue continues after a reboot, re-enable the service.
