My router is downstairs in my basement. I run this wifi extender to get Ethernet in my room upstairshttps://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Extender-Pass-Through-Outlet-TL-WA860RE/dp/B00PEW7V7E/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1481158041&sr=8-8&keywords=tp+link+wifi+extender. But, it's giving me slower speed than the regular network. I have tried to plug in the ethernet cord i get from the extender to run a router but it dosent work. Do i need a modem connection to run a router in my room? If so, can i get one without buying another connection?

As stig say`s Luke,

You are best off if you can running the highest quality of Ethernet cable you can from the Modem/ Router in your basement to the Ethernet port of your system.

If the Maximum run of the cable must be about 95M in length, any longer and you will start to suffer from signal or reduced speeds obtained by the cable run.

You should use for the cable run a Cat 6 rated Ethernet cable or at least a Cat 5E Ethernet cable to get the best possible speed out of a long network cable run.
Also if you have to run the cable along side any electrical, or other type of cable keep it parallel to that run of cable also try not to cross it over, or under the other cable if present.

You should get from a Cat 6 cable if it is shorter...

You should get from a Cat 6 cable if it is shorter in run length than a 95m run anywhere from 10 Mbps up to 100 Mbps network speeds. or if the router can do 1000 Mbps- 1Gbps network transmission 200 Mbps or more.
