can i use two differnt brands and sizes of ram?

okay so I bought a prebuilt and have been adding onto it for a while now and I need to get some more ram the ram I have now is 2 4gb adata ddr3 1600 sticks I was thinking about getting 2 8 gb sticks of 1866 speed to throw in there too would that be possible? my mobo is a gigabyte ga990fx gaming sli my cpu is amd fx 8350 and my gpu is msi radeon rx 470 8gb all suggestions are welcome! thanks! my mobo also have 4 ddr3 slots

You can try to add whatever you want. Just be aware all of your RAM will run at the speed of the slowest kit you have if it runs at all. 24GB of RAM on an AMD FX platform might not be the best idea either. They are a lot more sensitive to RAM than an Intel system would be.

What are you doing that's using more than 8GB?

Brand does not really make a difference. Speed and capacity makes more of a difference. Most people recommend using sticks of the same speed and capacity across all ram slots for maximum performance, but this does not mean that rams sticks of different speeds and capacity will not work if installed together. since they are not the same speed they might not run at their full potential
