I was wondering what different tech-savvy people do to protect their privacy online. What do you use? What do you suggest?
It would be really great you can also share your profession if it is relevant and you are comfortable in it :)

For me, it's:
1. Don't visit warez/xxx sites
2. Don't social network (facebook etc.)
3. Use safe passwords, not words, but generated, no password reusing on multiple sites or cycling it, depending on importance change password every 12/6/3 months
4. Prefer cable connection over wifi (or at least make sure it's properly encrypted)
5. Use decent firewall
6. Use separated account for each user on your computer, do not turn off UAC, don't use admin account out of being lazy
7. Keep your system up to date to get security fixes asap

Everything above, here's my take.

Online privacy starts with what you share. If you're on social media, even linkedin, you're sharing some information about yourself, pictures. Which is fine, but make sure that you're sharing only with your friends on facebook for example, clean that friend list up as well. But more importantly, you're 100% responsible for what you do post and share, so be conscious of how much and what you share.

You can also use a VPN service to encrypt your web data. This encapsulates all data that goes in and out online, so that even your ISP cannot see what sites you're visiting or what you're downloading. Good for warez sites ONLy if the VPN service supports it. Some reply to DMCA takedowns and trace the VPN IP for notices to be sent... So in other words, a VPN is not a silver bullet, but adds a very effective security layer for privacy.
