File transfer caused computer lockup

So i picked up a new external hard drive today and started copying over around 300gb of files, this ran for about an hour and a half no problem, then i left the computer to do some things and when i came back everything was completely locked up with 9 minutes left on the file transfer, task manager wouldnt open and i couldnt close any programs.

At this point i did some googling and was told to open cmd and kill tasks through there, that didnt work either.

The mouse cursor was perfectly responsive the whole time, and most windows were too until i clicked on them, after around 20 minutes i managed to get around 2 programs closed. I was very apprehensive of hard rebooting the pc since i didnt want to corrupt any of the drives and i wasnt sure if that was a possibility.

After this i tried logging off and force closing programs that way, and it appeared to work, but then got stuck on the log off screen for about another 20 minutes, at this point i figured there wasnt anything i could do so i just hard reset the pc.

On reboot everything appeared normal until i logged onto windows i was met with a black screen and a cursor, nothing else, i left to google this new problem and when i came back everything was working perfectly. The file transfer appears to have stopped itself correctly, around 30gb of files were not copied but the rest seem to be functional.

I am on windows 7 with an internal hdd and ssd, windows is installed on the ssd, the file transfer was going between two external hard drives, both western digital.

My question is what happened? and should i be worried? Is there anything else i should do, or is everything better now?

Hey there again, @Klooger!

How are both of your WD external drives formatted? What is their file system? If you have formatted them in FAT32 file system for best compatibility with multiple operating systems, you will definitely face issues when transferring files that are larger than 4 GB. You can read through some of the File & partition size limitations that come with this particular file system.
If it's not a formatting issue but rather a USB 3.0 connectivity issue (since they work okay from the USB 2.0 ports), I'd recommend you check on your USB hub controller drivers and make sure you got the latest ones installed manually from your motherboard/PC manufacturer's official website.

Hope it works. Let me know if you...
Hey there, @Klooger!

I'm sorry to hear about your transfer rate issues with the new WD external HDD. If the issue happened only while transferring from one external to another, I'd advise you to check how they would perform if you swap the USB cables and try plugging them in different USB ports as well. If you have access to another working PC, try transferring the data from there as well. This will be helpful to determine what could be the source of the issue.

I'd also advise you have a copy of all the files stored on the external HDDs somewhere else as well before you start troubleshooting them. This is how you will avoid any potential data loss. Afterwards, it might also be a good idea to check their health and SMART status by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from our Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows.

Keep me posted with the results!

I do have some files i need to transfer off my laptop but it doesnt have any usb 3 ports so im not sure if well see anything there. And the only two i have on my main pc that i can use are on the front panel which are being used for both hdds, Ive had one of them for over a year with no problems, ive also run 2 externals the same way off both of these ports, but only ever had one usb 3 capable hard drive that whole time, this is the first instance where both are.

But its 1am right now, so ill get back with some more info in the morning.

Alright so i just moved around 100gb of files over form my laptop over a usb 2 connection and had no problems, as far as i can tell now it just seemed like a data overload or something? ill backup the rest of my files in small segments of a few 10s of gb i guess, and see if anything happens.
