New Hard Drive Randomly Losing Power?

I had a WD Black 1TB 3.5" data drive that died, so I replaced it with a new WD Black 2TB 3.5" drive. I also run a Samsung 850 Evo SSD for my OS.

Both drives were running off the same PSU connector. Power Supply is a RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-630SS 630W, which is overkill for what I run.

My new drive seems to lose power randomly. I can hear the "chug-ching" noise of the drive losing power and spinning back up.

I moved the drive to its own Power Supply cable, and it seems to do it less but it still happens.

These noises didn't happen with the WD 1TB drive that died.

If it matters, my system runs off a CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS 1000VA 600W PFC Compatible. PowerPanel software shows the UPS load is between 120-200 watts.

What's the best way to troubleshoot this?

Hey there, @ES13Raven!

I'm sorry to hear about your old WD Black failing on you. :( However, I suspect that this new 2 TB Black is most probably experiencing a connectivity issue. Swapping the cables is a good idea, just make sure you also check how the HDD would react to a different SATA cable (the one going to the mobo) as well. Another alternative troubleshooting method is checking how the WD Black will get recognized and how it would behave in a different working system. In other words, if you have access to another PC, check its connectivity there as well.

P.S. Don't forget to backup all important data from the problematic drive somewhere off-site (e.g. external, cloud storage, etc.) before you proceed with the troubleshooting! Better be safe than sorry!

Let me know how it goes & good luck!

I tried plugging in the hard drive to the same connector as the SSD drive, but without a SATA cable. The same random power on/off of the drive happens. When I plug the drive into a different system, the hard drive stays powered on just fine. So I think this is a PSU issue.

I changed the power supply cable, and both HDDs are plugged into the same one. The problem seems to have gone away. So faulty PSU cable I guess?
