Hard drive performance in Synology NAS device using software RAID vs. internal drives and controller.

I’m a photographer with about 5-6TB of data, currently stored across 4 4TB drives in an internal RAID5 setup. I use a Highpoint 2721 controller. I’m considering a Synology DS1515 NAS which supports multiple configurations. From what I’ve read, these devices use software RAID but do it using their own CPU and RAM. So there’s no additional overhead for my desktop hardware. My question is whether my drives will perform as well in the Synology NAS as they do internally? I’m planning to connect it to my desktop via eSATA. In this case, the Synology would function as my primary storage. I’d back up regularly to external hard drives via USB. If there’s going to be a performance hit, I’d consider buying a new set of drives and running the Synology as a constant backup with the additional function of making my files available to me when I travel.

Hope this makes sense and thanks for your help.

12/16/16 update: thanks for your answer, @kanewolf. I now realize that I can't have my cake and eat it. I don't want to give up the performance (roughly 400Mb/s) of my RAID, so I'm putting the server on hold. My best bet seems to be a Drobo 5Dt which has a TB2 interface. If I need to access my files remotely, I'll do so through my desktop.

Your performance will be lower because you are limited by your network. Gigabit ethernet is limited to 100 to 110MB/s. You probably get 3X that with an internal RAID controller.

I don't believe you can connect a DS1515 to your computer via eSATA. It has an eSATA port to connect external storage to the Synology, but it does not provide client connectivity via eSATA.

Thanks, kanewolf. Does this mean that Synology's numbers (369 to 443 MB/s)

https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/performance#5_10bay

are theoretical because there's no way to actually get the data out of the NAS any faster than 100-110MB/s ?

Thanks, hadn't realized that.

You can get those numbers in the aggregate. Notice that the DS1515 has four ethernet ports. IF you aggregate those 4 ethernet ports to a managed switch and have multiple (4+) simultaneous clients accessing the NAS, you can get that performance. Each of those individual clients will be limited to about 100MB/s.
