can i use two graphics cards that are not the same and not have a SLI setup?

i have two different graphics card and i would like to use both for more GPU power power put do i need a splitter to use both and do they have to be the same graphics card

They don't have to be the same brand but they do have to be the same GPU. For example you can use SLI with 1 MSI 1070 and 1 EVGA 1070. You cannot use SLI with a 1070 and a 970.
