I expect my machine to handle android development (android studio) and unity development. My budget is $600-$700.
I'm afraid that i would get under powered with a laptop in this budget. I Occasionally need to switch between different locations to work, this is stopping me from getting a desktop. Could anyone help me out with this.

for desktop i decided with the following
i5 6500
asus h110m d
8gb ram
250gb ssd
monitor (23" dell ips s2216h )

i would expect the same with laptop but skylake i5 6200u is only dual core and is under-clocked when compared to the 6500.

I purchased this laptop recently. I did not have much time to do anything with it except to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, install 1TB hard drive, install updates, and clean up unnecessary files off the SSD.

With regards to the 256GB SSD...

With regards to the 256GB SSD...

- The actual usable storage space is 225GB.
- After moving the pagefile to the D: drive, disabling hibernation, and disabling System Restore Points, Windows uses 28GB. That leaves 197GB of available storage.
- I also used Disk Cleanup to remove all unnecessary system files as well.
- There are a few hidden partitions that you do not see or have access to. This is were Windows 10 is stored in case you need to do a clean install of Windows. There are also other recovery tools as well that the laptop uses.

This is basically the least expensive laptop you can purchase with a quad core i5 CPU and the nVidia GTX 960m.

Solution

Also have that laptop, really good deal at that price.

It's easy enough to add a 1tb HDD to it as well if you want, or add another stick of ram.

It'll run any modern game, not necessarily at a good quality, but it will suite your needs, and should have plenty of power for android software development. Unity may be a smidge hard for it, but it should be able to do it at least.
