I was thinking of purchasing a Dell optiplex 790 and it currently has an Intel i3 processor which is underwhelming for me as a gamer. I was wondering if this optiplex is AMD processor compatible since it does come with an AMD radeon graphics card. All of the posts I found only showed Intel processors compatible. Also is it possible to use a dual core i5, that is also not listed as being compatible. I think the list on the dell site doesn't include ALL processors that could work

Solution

If you will swap out the CPU and motherboard, why bother getting the Dell in the first place? Just buy new parts and build the system clean. You don't buy a 4 cylinder car then swap in a 6 cylinder engine and change the transmission, it's a lot easier to just buy the 6 cylinder car in the first place. Once you put in the cost of the parts and time you spend on the fix, you will have the same price but one is a banged together part, the other is factory new.
if you bought a dell with an Intel cpu, the motherboard will not be AMD compatible (for CPU), the video card may very well be AMD/ATI, but that is not relevant to the main CPU compatibility with Motherboard.
technical manual for your PC https://www.manualslib.com/manual/700303/Dell-Optiplex-790.html
on this page https://www.manualslib.com/manual/700303/Dell-Optiplex-790.html?page=12#manual
you can see the list of supported CPU depending on the type of case your 790 is in
refer to this page to identify MT/DT/ etc : https://www.manualslib.com/manual/700303/Dell-Optiplex-790.html?page=2#manual

If you are a gamer do not buy an OEM business class system, build your own or at least by a workstation system not a basic use desktop. OEM motherboard have lots more issue when running higher end and newer video cards, power supplies are usually weak, cases are too small for upgrades, etc...

1. yes but I don't see why you would need to change case (which one do you have from dell? MT/DT/SF USFF?
2. on CPU if you don't read the answers to your questions what is the point of us bothering answering the questions
I answered this question earlier, go read my answer.

The i3 should not be underwhelming because it can play most AAA titles if paired with a nice graphics card... Don't be fooled by the two cores, it has 4 threads so you'd be fine gaming with it. As for the system as a whole, it wouldn't be good for gaming. Just build your own PC from scratch
