Hard drive with partition broke and now I can't restart or refresh the computer because a drive partition is missing

From what I've been reading in the forums, I installed my Windows 8 in two hard drives, the SSD where the OS is and a hard drive where the partition is. The hard drive is not working well (i.e. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't) so I bought and installed a new one. But now the OS won't work because I need something from the old hard drive.

I don't want to touch the old hard drive because it might break more and a friend is hoping to recover files before it does.

I read in one of the comments that I should try booting and re-installing Windows 8 using the installation CD and click repair computer. I did but it says there's a disk partition missing so the computer is locked. (It's not verbatim. I tried it this morning and forgot the message already). I also tried Restart computer but the same message appeared. Is there a way to do this without using the old hard drive?

I don't mind wiping the SSD because I'm pretty sure only the OS there. My goal is basically re-installing the windows 8 with only the SSD plugged in so I won't have this problem in the future.

Thanks

Solution
try booting with a usb and then click on custom install, remove all the partitions and if you need to click "new" and then ok then click next, it should install if it doesn't then get a new hard drive
