Onboard graphics or old GPU?

Hi all,

I have a question about old graphics cards vs. integrated graphics. I've just ordered a flashy new PC, as I was long overdue an upgrade. To spread the costs, I've decided to stick with my old graphics card (GTX 275) for the time being and maybe splash out on a new GPU in a few months (probably a 6GB GTX1060).

Now, I know the GTX 275 is a bit of a relic, but it's done me proud and I'm happy to put up with it for the time being. But then I read somewhere that these days, onboard graphics can outperform some of the older GPUs. So my question is this: do I shove my GTX275 into my new machine, or do I stick with the onboard graphics?

I should add that I'm a PC gamer but I'm happy to plump for lesser graphics for the time being. I'm looking at how to get the best performance with what I've got ATM.

Here's the specs of the new PC:

CPU: Intel i5 6500
RAM: 8GB 3000mhz DDR4 (2x4GB)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-P
Operating System: Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
SSD: 525gb Crucial MX300 525Gb
HDD: 1TB SATAIII 6.0Gb
PSU: 650W

Thanks all!

The i5 6500 has Intel HD Graphics 530 and supports the newest version of DX12, plus Vulkan and OpenGL 4.4. The GTX 275 supports DX10 and OpenGL 3.3 only. In terms of the games, the HD 530 is going to offer more compatibility.

But as for the games that the GTX 275 will actually still run (by looking at Passmark benchmarks) you will probably find that the GTX 275 is still quicker. I would guess by about ~50%.

But you will need to test it yourself and see. The GTX 275 certainly has more raw compute performance...

I personally think that the i5-6500's IGPU would bring more performance than a GTX 275.

I mean, you could always benchmark both to see which brings better performance, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the 275.
