Hey guys.
I'm a solider and I'm home for 2-3 days every 2 weeks so I don't get to use the computer a lot.
My GPU just died and I'm looking for a new one that will last for the next 2 years until I finish my duty and buy a new computer. I play csgo and lol mostly but I might play GTA V, battlefield 1, watch dogs 2 and such. I will be playing on 1080p. I was looking for used cards and I found these two. The only difference is that 970 is 25$ cheaper, both got 1 year warranty. Which one should I get?

My specs:
Gtx 570
i5 2310 (can switch a 2500K)
8GB RAM 1333MHz
fractal design core 3000
GA-P67A-D3-B3
Seasonic PSU 620W Active PFC 80+ Retail570

Solution
I think with a GTX 970 you're ready to go,, but, how much are you going to pay? Mainly at today, there are new released cards, and you can get better performance vs time.
The 970 would be the obvious card to get.... but it is older generation. And the likely cheaper 1060 is a lot faster

The 3GB model is a bit cheaper, is about 7% slower than the 3GB version if cost matters.

Assuming you had the choice between a $200 GTX 1060 3 GB and a $260 6 GB version, I'd probably lean slightly toward the 3 GB version because it is 30% cheaper, which is more than the performance difference, no matter which of our tests you're looking at. These 60 bucks could get you a ton of great titles that are on sale, or one AAA game; remember, money is tight. Yet if you can easily afford $260 or slightly higher and are more focused on future-proofing your system, 6 GB is a a viable option too. Also worth considering at that price point is the Radeon RX 480 if you can live with its higher power draw, heat output, and fan noise. The choices in this segment are definitely not easy - feel free to let us know what you would buy in the comments section of this review.

The market where I live is a bit experience. The deal I got is 185$ for the gtx and 210$ for the r9 (both used). I also got a deal of 238$ for the Palit GeForce GTX 1060 Dual 3GB which doesn't look so shinny and costs more than the others. I dont want to spend more than 200$+-, i dont think its worth it if im going to get a new one 2 years from now. If u have some suggestions tell me and I will tell you what's the price here.

Right now, there are new cards (The sweet spot for 1080p are RX 480 4-8GB from AMD or GTX 1060 (3gb or 6gb)).

Now, GTX 970 and R9 390 yes, are 'old' but if you just want to sit down, enjoy the game and back to work, they're good cards.

In your case, GTX 970 will do the job, not sure how long time, but it will work, maybe you should sacrifice performance along the time.

Can you give me a deeper explanation for why the GTX970 will do better than the R9 390 in my case?

And should I pay the extra 50$ for the Palit GeForce GTX 1060 Dual 3GB? Is that a good benchmark?

1) Short answer: GTX 970 is faster than R9 390 in 1080p.

2) Depends mainly , reason here:

GTX 970 comes with 4GB VRAM (3.5GB faster , 0.5GB slow), so, there you have a trouble. Maybe in the future (2-3 years) games will consume more VRAM and there, you will start to notice problems. Solution: Turn down some graphics option.

R9 390: Will do the job fine, 8 GB of VRAM plenty sure you will not have any trouble in the future. But, it will be enought faster to run everygame smoothly? No one knows.

GTX 1060: One of the cards spotted as 1080p better cards. Now, 3GB you're playing with fire. Mainly for the reason i wrote with the GTX 970, its faster, but maybe you will have troubles.

RX 480: Not sure if you have in mind this card, but i saw this (4 month after released both cards) and hell, i didn't spected that, almost head-to-head with the GTX 1060 6GB.

Now, the RX 480 not sure which price is in your country, but the MRSP is 200$ usd (4gb). You can pick one, and after a long time if you want, flash the bios to jump to 8gb (NOTES: THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH ALL CARDS AND YOU SHOULD SEARCH BEFORE DOING IT).

Sooo, if you want to just play, and after some time you can turn down some settings and live with that (i'm saying this mainly some people don't want this and feel dirty), then GTX 970 is a good choice for you.

Now, if you want to be safe for years, and be sure you will able to play everything, my order of choosing from first to last (talking performance) is

GTX 1060 6GB - RX 480 4GB - 8GB - GTX 1060 3GB - R9 390 8GB.

Hope you can understand what i said lol.

Since the RX 480 starts from 300$ where I live ( g1, nitro+, MSI gaming) and I'm sure I will buy a new computer in 2 years, I don't want to spend that much. If I understood you right the 970 run current games better than the 390, but if we talk about upcoming games the 970 won't be able to run on high setting while the 390 will be but with poor performance. Is that right?
I think I will go for the 970 in this case. Any last thoughts?

I've good some new offers can you tell me if they are any better?

ASUS STRIX R9 390 for 250$
ASUS R9 390X OC for 260$
ASUS GTX780Ti for 250$
Gigabyte GTX690 for 260$
EVGA GTX780 SC for 160$

Value for money and performance wise, should I take the GTX970 for one or those?

just wanted to let you know that ive decided to invest more money in a new card and got into the 1060 vs 480 argument.
After watching some videos and discussing with some guys on the internet, i decided to go with the rx 480 8gb, manly because its cheaper and will probably be more relevant in the future. The question now is should i go for the nitro+ 8gb which goes for 305$ or should i invest even more money and go for the msi gaming x 8gb which goes for 326$? Worth the 20$ bucks? there is also the nitro+ oc for 323$. Maybe i should get the cheaper nitro+ 4gb which goes for 246$

from what i've read the nitro+ OC is the fastest of all 480 but gets hot and nosiy. its not ture about the not OC verison because the lower clock speed am i right? The msi is more quiet and cooler, i would go for it any day but the price bothers me.

it goes like this:
Price- MSI > NITRO+OC > NITRO+
Performance - NIRTO+OC > MSI > NITRO+
Heat & Noise - MSI > NITRO+ > NITRO+OC
OC potential - i dont think i will OC in the future because i have 0 knowledge about overclocking.
Electricty use - i dont know the difference between the cards in that case, can you help me with that?

did i get it right?

The MSI boost clock when on OC mode is 1316MHz and the Nitro+OC's is 1342MHz. if i decided to OC can the msi reach 1342MHz and stay quiet and cooler?

Mhz differences are almost no noticeable in game, 2-5fps more or less not make any improvement of gaming.

About the electricity just don't look at that, if you have a 620w PSU both cards will work fine.

Just to be clear, both card, will almost perform at the same level, if in your country is cheaper the nitro+ then the nitro+ is the one to select.

The nitro+OC and the MSI gaming x costs almost the same. The non oc version is 20$ cheaper. I don't mind the noise but I'm afraid of the heat. My last card got really hot while gaming and that's why he died, if not I would be still using it.

I'm sorry for being so insecure and asking so many questions.
This is the last one for real this time. MSI RX 380 gaming x 8gb (326$) vs EVGA gtx1060 acx SSC 6gb (342$). Quick summary: I need a card for 2-3 years. I play on 1080p 60hz might updrage to 144hz. I will be playing battlefield 1, watch dogs 2, GTA V, mafia 3, dishonored 2, hitman etc...
What do you think? Don't for get freesync, dx12/vulkan, I don't mind the noise but I care about the temperature. I don't think I will OC unless its realy worth it. And as you said electricity used doesn't matter with my PSU.

I'm buying the card on wednesday
