A few months ago my pc started to shut down randomly... i thought nothing of it for awhile but now it has started happening more often. I assume my pc is over heating but im not sure if it could be anything else. Also when i built my pc i didnt organize the wires very neat so another question i had is can i rewire my pc without hurting anything?

To monitor hardware temperature you can use something like this http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html and then look up what is normal for your CPU and compare use prime95 software to stress test it for like an hour. For power supply it can be difficult to diagnose easiest way is just trying another one.

How would I verify these problems?

I had a problem some years ago of random sudden shut-downs that slowly got more frequent. After much searching for clues and trying things, it got a lot worse. Then I discovered clear signs of failing PSU and changed it. Never had the problem back. Inside the PSU, it had a few large capacitors with bulging tops - from that period about 2005 to 2009 when there was a rash of these problems.

Ok so after running a short stress test (am going to run a longer test after im done here) my cpu seems to run fine... so i was wondering if it could be that after using my pc for awhile would overheating be another cause?

If you run prime 95 for like 10 minutes and it doesn't crash it should not be overheating issue.
Most likely your PSU is the culprit I usually just go grab one at best buy to test with and return it if its not the issue.
Always buy quality power Supply like Evga g2 series there is a reason they cost more its not about the wattage.
