Should I upgrade my mobo or can I get by.

I have a MSI 970A-G45 motherboard which is currently sporting an AMD Phenom II x4 975 black edition. It has served me well for years but it appears it's no longer cutting the mustard. I would like to upgrade to something like the AMD FX-8300, which to my understanding will work on my current motherboard.

So my question is, does it make sense to just upgrade the CPU at this point and then at a later date I can upgrade the motherboard when I have more funds or should I wait and upgrade them both? I'm not a real heavy gamer. But I do enjoy playing fallout and skyrim and the like, and after purchasing Doom I found it doesn't run with my current setup and a look at the system requirements seem to point to the processor as the culprit.
Any advice? Or does any of what I said make sense?
