Hi,

I was updating windows 7 ultimate 64 bit to SP1 and I had to restart it for it to apply the patch but during this it restarted again but this time all I got was a black screen with a blinking line in the top left. The only thing I can do is enter bios and that's all. I'd like to know if there a way I an restore my system to a previous date as I do not want to lose the data I have in C drive.

Many thanks

There's usually a way to rollback. First, from the bios, have you selected the device to boot from (your disk), and then it also falls to a blinking line?

I do not have a windows dvd with me, that is a problem. Also, if you're talking about the line, it is a blinking line that falls a couple of rows and that's where it gets stuck. I did have some issues before trying to run Skyrim SE and had some problems due to the fact that the lastest visual studio was giving me errors when trying to install it and it would cancel the installation.

The blinking line means it can't boot. You can get in the BIOS, right? Then select your drive to boot in. If it then goes back to the blinking line, it probably means the boot sector is broken. Without a Windows disk, it will be hard to fix.

You're trying to enter safe mode by holding down the F8 key, right?

I understand now. I can get into BIOS, it's about the only thing I can do. Will go out and get a DVD and try to repair Windows to avoid losing the data on my C drive and then reinstall it. F8 key doesn't work in any way, pressed continously, tapped, shit+F8, nothing.

Even if you get a dvd, if it doesn't match the initial dvd install "generation", it won't help. Sounds like you pirated software, and now you face the consequence of not getting support.

I got a dvd and downloaded my version of Windows. In less than 2 minutes it fixed it. Are there any differences between Windows Ultimate and Professional? I'd like to reinstall Windows in the next days and I wouldn't want to upgrade to Windows 10 in the near future. I have Ultimate now but have also a Professional product key.
