I have a Toshiba Satellite C55D-A5108 machine with 4 GB RAM. I just inserted into the extra memory slot a 8GB DDR3 card that seems compatible. The machine booted up and the system shows 12 GB of RAM. How can I check to see if it is working correctly? How do I check to see the machine is working faster?

Thank you

the main factor for speed is the used processor. Of course it´s not wrong to have enough headroom, but if you just use some office apps or browsing the web, 4GB should be fine for everything. Video/photo editing or rendering can improve performance with more RAM of course.
It really depends for what you are using the laptop.

You can check yourself the memory usage in windows by the task or ressource manager
