Ok, i don't know a lot about Storage but i'll try my best to explain my issue.

My Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB worked completely fine until i unplugged the USB cable to my computer (turned off computer before removing it) and when i plugged it back in again i experienced issues with my computer "unplugging" the HDD at random times. When i play games downloaded on my External HDD it sometimes crashes because of my computer "unplugging it".
After my computer "unplugs" it, it just works fine until it happens again.

I've tried replacing the USB cable for my external hard drive trying to fix the issue, but it did not work!

If it helps here are the items involved:

Computer: ASUS ROG GR6

External Hard Drive: Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB (HDD)

USB Cable for External HDD (Not original): DACOTA P. USB3.0 A TO MICRO 1M BK

Hey there, Razlio.

I'd recommend that you backup all important data which you might have written on that drive (including game save data) if you haven't done it already, just to be on the safe side.
It was a good idea to try it out with a different USB cable, but I'd also suggest that you give it a go with a different computer as well, to see if the same thing happens.
I'd also recommend that you download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and test the drive for errors and/or bad sectors, to see if there's anything out of the ordinary.

Hope that helps.

Hey Boogieman_WD

I do not know where to find my manufacturers diagnostic tool and i do not know how to backup my files (mostly Steam files).
Any help? :p

Sure thing. You should be able to find the diagnostic tool on the manufacturer's website. Here's also an article with diagnostic tools (both brand related and 3rd party ones): https://www.lifewire.com/free-hard-drive-testing-programs-2626183.

By backing up important files I meant having a copy of data you can't replace on a different storage device, so that you have that data in case there's something wrong with the HDD and it fails.
If it's mostly Steam file you could take a look at this KB on how to move steam games and installation: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129.

My problem just doesn't go away. I've tried running a short generic scan and a long generic scan on my External HDD using SeaGate tools (the manufactorers diagnostic tool) and it says the HDD is working properly, but noooo. Still having the same issue as mentioned before. Still the same "connection problem".

Do I need to replace my external HDD?

And btw thank you for all the help so far. I really appreciate it :)

Well that's a good sign at least. It might mean that the drive is actually fine and it could be something as simple as a faulty cable. Give it a go with a different one, to see if the connection issue still persists. You could also try it with a different computer, to see if the same thing happens. :)

It sounds like it. Try it with a different computer as well. If you don't have that option try accessing the Device Manager, then find the HDD there right click and select "uninstall". After that reconnect the drive so that Windows can install it again and see if that fixes things up.

I have had issues with Asus motherboards not having enough power delivery for USB powered hard drives, including symptoms like this. Try hooking up a powered USB 3.0 hub between the system and the hard drive and see if that helps.

Ok, so i don't have a USB 3.0 Hub, but i can buy one.

I think i've found a good one that works.

Here's the link to it: https://www.komplett.no/product/877697/pc-nettbrett/pc-tilbehoer/usb-hub/tp-link-uh720-usb-30-7-ports-hub#

(please tell me what you think)

p.s the site is norwegian

If you could hook it up to a friend's computer it might do the same job, just to see if the drive works properly. Basically the hub could really help if it's a power issue so any externally powered USB hub should be fine in this case.

If that fails as well, I'd suggest that you get in touch with the manufacturer's customer support and see if you have any other options.
