Will AMD Zen Still Support DDR3?

Will Zen support DDR3? If so great, because Ill only upgrade my motherboard but if not then I'd be upgrading RAM and Mobo! So if it doesn't support ddr3 ill just switch to skylake cuz I am currently paying off for a new car and a snowmobile!

that's exactly what i said

in order for the mobo to have ddr3 support when zen itself does not support it, the controller will be on the motherboard. thanks for restating it with caps for emphasis :D

zen itself will not support ddr3 as amd has made very clear, but since history tends to repeat itself, someone will make a zen mobo with ddr3 support for that small niche of users who desire it. clearly the op is such a niche user and would like one.

it's a bit premature to declare ddr3 dead to amd considering the same thing was done for ddr2 when ddr3 came out. as was ddr1 when ddr2 came out and so on.

but i'll just go away now and let you believe it won't happen again when it has happened so recently with skylake. i mean would be...

i don't think zen will support ddr3. there may be a couple mobo's that will support it but they tend to be costly. there are a number of skylake mobo's that offer ddr3 support so it is not out of the question for an amd board to do it as well.

won't know anything specific until parts hit the market but i would consider it safe to say it is likely there will be a ddr3 zen mobo or 2 eventually.

I'm just now seeing the LGA 1151 motherboards that are DDR3. I remember looking for them a while back and couldn't find any. I guess it does take the board partners a long time to make them. I also see they are more expensive almost to the point buying new DDR4 RAM would be the same price difference.

yah takes a while and won't be many options but they will probably be there. but like you noted, the price makes just getting ddr4 a better option anyway in most cases. but if they make a mobo that can do both ddr3 and 4, then it may be worth it to use the old ddr3 sticks for now and upgrade later.

I don't care if I have to wait that long since my FX8370 handles games pretty well. But I am considering an upgrade soon and hopefully I can find a ddr3 mobo! Thanks for the help.

right the controller is not in the chip but on the mobo itself. this is most of the reason such motherboards cost more than just ddr4 ones. but i have little doubt there will be at least a few models that support ddr3 and 1-2 that will have slots for both on the same board. can only ever use one type at a time but some find it handy to use old ram for a while then upgrade and not have to swap the mobo out.

skylake does not support ddr3 either as noted but the boards that allow it also have the separate controller in them. kind of like the old days before such things were on the chip but were on the north and south bridges of the motherboard.

there were also ddr2 mobo's when ddr3 hit and on down the line. so the history is certainly there for folks who want to hold onto the old ram for a while longer.

That may be true for Intel, but, AMD since what, socket 754 has ALWAYS had the controller on the CPU, even when they made the DDR/2/3 jumps and used controllers that would let users use either the current or previous memory type.

Anyways, from what I can find, Zen will not support DDR3, at all. DDR3 is EOL as is the current FX lineup. On the bright side, DDR4 prices will probably come down more.

oh well! Ill just have to upgrade practically half my computer unless Something good happens but i doubt it. I am so hoping it will support ddr3 otherwise... I mightt have to buy a 9590.

I personally do not see why dropping god knows how much on a power hog (the 9590) makes more sense than buying new RAM if you do a new build... RAM isn't that costly these days... Now, if you are running 32GB of ECC I could see why you would wanna try to stick with something that uses the same type of RAM, but you likely are not using ECC.

lol, the cpu was just such a power hungry beast that most mobo's could not handle it. the few models that are good enough to actually power one still have a ton of issues with throttling and power delivery problems.

am3 mobo's were just not meant to provide 225w+ to a cpu!! but was a neat idea, just not done very well.

This is probably the wrong topic to ask on but I've been overclocking my 8370 for about 4 months now and its all been fine I usually top out at 4.3-4.5 GHz but when I applied these settings today my PC crashes. I kept the voltage at normal hoping I didn't need to adjust that, but maybe I do?

if you changed nothing and all of a sudden it started crashing it could be a handful of issues. since most people are not really looking at this thread to answer a new question, it would be helpful for you to create a new thread in the overclocking part of the forum. lots of knowledgeable people who can help troubleshoot any problems.

you're just unlikely to get many people happen by on this old thread about an unrelated topic :)
