I have an i7-4790k with a stock cooler, which I was planning on upgrading somewhere down the road.
However, recently I have began having issues with thermal throttling as my CPU is reaching temps of 100C at idle.

I am going to lay off using my system until I install a new cooler however I would like to know if there is a way to know if permanent damage is caused. If there is please let me know!

Solution
You can run a benchmark and see how it compares to other 4790Ks'
That said, Intel chips will typically throttle themselves to prevent you from damaging it.
