So about 2 days ago I added a 2nd hdd no problems pic booted everything is good. So this morning I try to boot nothing it gets to the win7 starting windows screen and hangs there waited close to an hour and still nothing tried some things and finally pulled the new drive and we fire right up. Now my question is why did everything work then and not now only reason I care is because I transferred a lot of stuff to it and would like the xtra storage

Hey there, Eosdrake.

It is indeed a bit weird that it worked fine at first, but started causing that kind of issues after 2 days. I can't tell for sure what might be wrong, so you'd have to do some troubleshooting.
First, let's take a possible connection issue out of the way - go ahead and try the drive with a different SATA port and cables (or even better - with a different computer), to see if the same thing happens.
Since you've mentioned you need the data you've transferred on it, you shouldn't run any tests on the drive until you get it back. So, try accessing the HDD via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if that OS is capable of recognizing the partition/s properly so that you can get to your files. You could also try using data...

You could also try using data recovery software if you're able to boot to Windows while having the drive connected (or perhaps hot-plug it if the motherboard supports it): https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
