Computer seems sluggish after an upgrade

So I built a custom rig in 2014 using an MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate motherboard and an i5-4440 Haswell cpu. Worked pretty great for the most part, and I figured black friday would be a good time to go for the next gen. I did some research, and settled on the ASUS H170M-E D3 and i7-6700K 8M Skylake. (Links below for use)

My computer seemed to be slow to boot the first few times, but by now it seems to be booting a bit faster than it used to. Though aside from that, the computer feels more sluggish, and most of my games have noticeable decreases in performance. Overwatch is a bit laggy and my sound is 100% ruined, gunshots and dialogue from other player characters turning to pure static and League of Legends having decrease framerate.

What could be the causes for this? I have a SSD coming in soon and I want to troubleshoot my problems before I try to move things over to the SSD.

Did you reinstall or recalibrate your OS to the new parts? If you were using Windows, Win installs itself unique to your hardware and swapping it out, even for something similar from the same company causes large issues with processor set instructions... What OS are you using, in any case?

It would be foolish to ask to list what you have done, so I recommend you read this article:
http://www.howtogeek.com/226510/how-to-use-your-free-windows-10-license-after-changing-your-pc%E2%80%99s-hardware/

and consolidate what you did to upgrade your PC with that... Windows 10 works differently than 7 in hardware changes, and I don't know exactly how despite running Windows 10 myself, but it seems to be much easier to handle.

Unrelated to your issue, but why did you choose an unlocked "K" CPU and pair it with a chipset that does not allow overclocking?

Anyway, I'd try reinstalling your OS. Changing motherboards, much less chipsets without a reinstall is asking for trouble.

Good point, I only noticed that after you mentioned it.

An 'H' series MB (H170 in your case) does not allow overclocking or tweaking or voltage management, which is a main kicker for a K series processor and is enabled by default. May want to check the processor settings in BIOS before proceeding to troubleshoot OS; there may be an unrelated or even underlying problem there.

The reason why I bought that motherboard specifically is because it's the only 1151 slot with DDR3 capability I could find, and I don't overclock. I bought that specific CPU because it had a big sale going for it and was both higher performance and cheaper than the other i7's available. I will check through the BIOS before messing with the OS, but if need be I'll probably reinstall Windows tonight and see how that goes.

I hope you're aware that you can't use 1.5v DDR3 safely with any Skylake CPU. Although 1.5v DDR3 will plug in and work, Skylake only supports DDR4 and DDR3L, which is 1.35v and lower. Run higher voltage DDR3 and you risk destroying your memory controller and killing your CPU.

I was not aware. For the moment I've lowered the speed and voltage on my RAM and I'll see how it handles. If it's still quick and remains stable I'll run the rug as is and see how it goes. If it has problems I'll buy new parts.

Skylake is an architectural jump so DDR3 support is kaput unless you acquire DDR3L (which in my honest opinion isn't worth the hassle), and undervolting memory like your patch probably isn't conducive towards maintaining a high-speed and sharp system like you'd expect from shelling out for a 6700K... Long-term you'll likely have to get the proper memory, and I'd be careful with messing about with RAM tweaks and such on an H chipset; they're not designed with very advanced handling in mind. However, your original problem may be some combination of the RAM or Windows, and proceeding along that assumption, I'd recommend resetting Windows (and keep your files obviously) after asserting your system is stable; however, Ecky can probably better advise you from this point.

I've reset Windows and things already feel a lot smoother. I'll see how games feel and if framerate handles alright. I'm running triple channel RAM so I'm not incredibly concerned about the lowered speed. I'll post once more after trying out all my games to see if resetting Windows fixed my issue.

After a bit of gaming and testing, my games are running even better than before the upgrade. Seems reinstalling Windows was the key and lowering the voltage of my RAM isn't causing any issues yet. Thanks for the help.
