Solution
So, let's do an analysis.

Acer:
Current-generation i5, ultra-low power version (launched 3Q 2016) 7.5-25W configurable depending on cooling capability.
8 GB DDR4 RAM
256GB PCIe (very fast) SSD
Intel Integrated graphics

HP:
3rd generation i5, mobile version (launched 1Q 2013 - so quite old) 35W.
4GB DDR3 RAM
500GB SATA storage
nVidia GeForce GT740M 2GB

The Acer will be a great notebook for general use in a university. Light, long battery life. Not much gaming possible

The HP is older, has discrete (but not very powerful) graphics, so should permit better gaming, but it's slower in most other aspects. Probably has worse battery life and is a little heavier. Little more gaming.

For gaming performance of...

i wouldnt buy a laptop for gaming, gaming of any kind. the gpus are labeled as `M` which is the laptop variant of that certain gpu. they usually dont even come close to their desktop counterparts. i would suggest a cheap 100$ or so laptop depending on your budget and BUILD a decent 500$-900$ desktop for everything else, emphasis on build, you never get what you pay for buying prebuilt. you`ll out perform basically all laptops in every category around the 1000$ range with a 500$ or sometimes less desktop. so depending on your budget id buy a cheap laptop to bring to class etc to take notes and build a decent desktop for gaming and browsing at home with the remainder of your budget how ever larger it may be

For gaming performance of those processors and the graphics, use the notebookcheck.net site.

You can do the research yourself, I can't call it for you. If low-end gaming is important, then I'd guess you should get the HP, otherwise if you were jsut looking for a college notebook, the Acer would be better.
