Fastest GPU with PCIE 2.0?

Well, here's my system:

Intel Core i7-4790K @ Stock w/ CRYORIG H7 Cooler
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SC GAMING
MSI H81M-P33
PNY ANARCHY 2x 8GB DDR3 1600 CL9 (16GB)
Kingston HyperX Savage 240GB (OS)
Hitachi Ultrastar 2TB 7,200RPM (Games)
EVGA 500B1

I'm just wondering if I will be able to use this same setup in a couple years when a new mid-range Nvidia GPU comes out that will compare to the Pascal Titan X. Because as of right now, I noticed that the good Z97 motherboards have already skyrocketed in price, assuming due to them no longer being manufactured.

My current motherboard will allow me to OC my 4790K to 4.6GHz and run stable. I wound't mind using my current mobo until the 4790k no longer runs games well enough to keep up with the latest GPUs. But if the PCIE 2.0 will limit that before the 4790K will limit that, I would rather get a z97 mobo before they become so limited in availability that they are unreasonable in price.

Oh. Never seen a 4790k on an H81 mobo, I forgot they were PCIE 2.0. It overclocks on that board?

PCIE 2.0 should be fine for a good long while, this is an older test but these guys found no difference at all using a 980 ti. While the titan pascal is a fair bit more powerful than the 980 ti, im guessing it would show the same results pcie 2.0 still has plenty of bandwidth.

Your 4790k should also be good for a long time as well. It might still be worth getting a Z97 board to pair with that cpu, I cant imagine that H81 board is going to last running an i7 at 4.6ghz.
 


I originally built the system with an i3-4160 + 750 Ti as a budget build thinking I wouldn't do much heavy gaming. Yes the MSI H81M-P33 does allow me to change the multiplier. No over-volting or BCKL increase though.

If I want a standard ATX mobo I will also need to purchase a bigger case. It just seems rather expensive, especially if the 4790K will last a couple more GPU generations at stock speeds.
