Hi guys, I wanted you opinon on this option.

Current System:
Processor: I3 540 (overclocked to 3.87)
Cooling: Deepcool Gamaxx 400 CPU Heatsink/Fan
Motherboard: BioStar TH55B
Ram: 8GB total Gskill Ripjaw Series DDR3 1300 (4x2GB sticks)
GPU: Radeon 380
PS: EVGA Suprnova 750w P2 Plat series
OS: Windows 10

I use this rig mostly for gaming, but also just common functions as watching movies/surfing/work
Games: ARK Survival Evolved (Running in High), League of Legends, DOTA 2, and a bunch of random steam games (I always give them a try if they are on a sale for a good price new/old)

My question is that I am defiantly experiencing the bottleneck of my first generation I3 as it being a dual core. ARK is the most graphics intensive game I play, but I suffer from stuttering on High settings in this game, but also in LoL when there are many particles (teamfights). This is not due to my GPU, but rather my processor when its usually at the 80 - 100% usage through task manager. Although I know that it would be better to upgrade to a new chip set and processor, I was wondering if upgrading to a cheap quad core be worth it since I really don't want to shell out $300 - $400 for a new setup.

Upgrade Potential:
Processor: I7 870 - $65-70 dollars
Ram: Upgrade to 16GB - Prob under $80 dollars

Hoping for: to last on the 55 chip set and LGA 1156 socket for 2 years more to play new games, but mostly upgrade my current games.

Do you guys think this would be a cheap (worth it) investment, or should I just save my money for the new Skylakes and go ahead and grab a new processor, mobo, and ddr4?

Thanks :)

Solution
If you can afford to save up for a 7th gen processor, that would be nice. However if your budget is small, just get a 1st gen i7 and another 4gb ram, both options are worth it. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding you post. So you would recommend the first gen i7 and another 4GB ram, but it wouldn't be worth it? You are recommending to save up for a new generation, correct?
