So after raising voltages and finally being able to overclock to 4.2Ghz im having temperature problems. While stress testing all 8 cores i stopped the stress test when i couldn't handle seeing the temps keep getting hotter slowly. I stopped the test when it hit 85 °C, at what temperatures do these chips start to throttle and how far can i push this chip voltage wise, i know my motherboard shouldn't be overclocking but it's handling it so far, I have an Asus M5A97 R2.0 LE it doesn't have vrm heatsinks. My voltage is currently at 1.3v. I am also using stock cooler which i will soon replace with a Aftermarket one. So the questions are; Any tips you could give me? At what temp does this chip throttle? Which cooler should i get? If possible recommend one that works with both Intel and AMD.

TJ Max is 62c package temp they will throttle somewhere around there, at 85c you are certainly throttling and probably very close to thermal shutdown. AMD recommends that chip not exceed 62c, you can damage the cpu at temps in the 80s, this is not an intel cpu it cant run happily into the upper 80s and lower 90s. My tip would be disable your overclock until you get a better cooler, before you kill that cpu and/or motherboard. The VRM's on that mobo are also pretty inadequate for a serious overclock. What would be your budget for a cooler? You dont need anything too expensive.

For sure get better cooler. Got Hyper EVO 212 and can safely overclock my FX-8300 to 4.3 GHz on all cores. Can easy reach stable 4.5GHz but wanna stay safe so...Though I got MSI 970 gaming board.
