Computer crashing while gaming [NEED HELP]

My computer crashes every time I play games, such as Overwatch, Battlefield or CS, but generally not games that are as computer intensive. (Computer is fine when web browsing, video streaming etc)

Previously, these crashes would occur due to the CPU overheating as the case would almost be too hot to touch. If I had immediately tried to turn the computer back on it would crash again in the boot screen. Finally, once the computer booted up it would directly take me to the BIOS screen with a prompt about the temperature.

I temporarily solved this issue why taking the side panel off and using a table fan to help cool the CPU. However, now, whilst playing these games the crashes are now occurring in the exact same way (i.e. crashing again if I immediately tried to reboot) but there is no sign of overheating - not hot whatsoever.

Also, the initial overheating started occurring about a year after owning the computer. There were no issues prior.

If anyone could help resolve this crashing issue, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

SPECS:
- Windows 10 64 Bit
- AMD FX 6300 six core
- 500 Watt power supply
- 8GB ram
- GTX 960
- ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard

edit: grammar.

Maybe get some info about what your computer temps get too and report back?

it may still be overheating, temps over 72c for the cpu are a cause for concern.

Could be a bad PSU as well, but if it overheats it may not start back up right away.
