New Version of Samsung Magician and overprovisioning?

OK - my old version of magician (4.9.7) when I did "check for new version" came back to say it was latest...
But when I check web site.. there is now a version 5. Samsung recommends always use latest - so I upgraded..

But this new one looks to miss some key features.. i.e. Overprovisioning? It seems have no way to report on overprovisioning.. and no way to set overprovisioning?
Now when I bought my 850 Evo - it said I should have 10% overprovisioning..
So whats the deal with new version of magician? They saying I don't need overprovisioning any more?
There is a "system compatibility" tab.. which reports no issues.. is that because t knows I have adequate overprovisioning? and it would give options to set up if it detected no overprovisioning?

Anyone know what the story is here? Is all OK? or is this new version dumbed down to the point of being useless? (in which case I will go back to 4.9.7)

Thanks in advance for any clarity.
Cheers

Hi, Yoji,

Someone asked a similar question regarding the newer version of the Magician software where he/she points out that there are some features missing, like OS Optimization and Overprovisioning.

Please, check this link and my response:

The initial inquiry was regarding to "OS Optimization" menu that is now gone in Magician 5, however, the reason I am bringing that up here is that the "Overprovisioning" menu is also missing and this made me curious if that is still needed today or, at least, if it would bring any benefit at all.

Hi, Yoji,

The initial inquiry was regarding to "OS Optimization" menu that is now gone in Magician 5, however, the reason I am bringing that up here is that the "Overprovisioning" menu is also missing and this made me curious if that is still needed today or, at least, if it would bring any benefit at all.

Even being able to manually implement Overprovisioning through any partition software, as Echohce mention, I am also unsure if Over-Provisioning is still necessary. I mentioned in the link above that all references I found related to this subject in some websites are from 2010, 2013 and, in the best scenario, 2014. I am speaking about official recommendations and guidances. I do see a lot of people still saying that yes, you should use it because it will improve your write performance and life span, but I am not particularly a believer.

I am not suggesting that this does not make sense and that they are wrong, all I am saying is that, with the natural evolution of hardware and software, some concepts might not be still valid. I was able to find some compelling reasons why the "OS Optimization" is missing (reference in the link above), but I didn't find anything (yet) related to the overprovisioning.

I have a Samsung 850 Pro and I used to use 10% of overprovisioning but I am currently not overprovisioning.
I will keep looking into this subject.

I hope I have helped.

Hey, I have a quick question that I've been wondering about, and I've been looking on Google but it really has trouble parsing exactly what I'm asking.

Is overprovisioned space the same as free space? For exampe, if you had two 100GB drives, and one has 90GB used with 10GB of free space, and the other drive also has 90GBs of used, but 10GB is set to overprovisioning, would they perform identically?

And while I have you here, discover anything new about this whole SSD optimizations arena lately that has surprised you?

Thanks in advance!

Over provisioning is giving more lifespan and more performance on IOPS when writting small files (7% of OP give 2 x IOPS and 2 x lifetime). At least by samsung's document for enterprise use: http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/downloads/document/Samsung_SSD_845DC_04_Over-provisioning.pdf

Of course, for regular users OP was removed in Samsung Magician 5.0, maybe we don't deserve it...

P.S.: yes I know over provisioning is just free space on HDD and anyone can do it via Computer Management, but definitely it was more comfortable for regular users in Magician software
