slow downloads on steam

so im having slow download speeds on steam. ive had this problem on my surface pro 4 and now on my new dell laptop both running windows 10. the speeds will pick up for a few seconds then drop to 0 for a few seconds. speed tests are normal on speedtest.net

my desktop is running windows 10 but the speeds are insane on that. i get a constant 18MB/s.

its not the servers.

There is the problem a normal low class sd card can't handle speeds over 5 mb/s. You were...

Your wifi connection is probably just not good and unstable.

start cmd.exe as an admin then run
netstat.exe -b
it will show a list of network connections being used by the machine and by each program.
you might find you have too many network connections and that windows will make each new connection wait 3 minutes before it can be started.

if that is the case, disable or kill programs that use connections you don't need and wait for the connection to be freed (3.5 minutes) and see if the download starts to speed up.

wireless connections will work faster as you get closer to your router. Note: if there are many routers in the area they will interfere with each other. My condo has 55 routers that interfere with the 3 main bands that are used on the 2.4 GHz frequency. People get about 1% to 5% bandwidth because of it.

I went to the 5GHz router and to Ethernet over powerline to avoid the problem. neighbors just went to a stronger signal to drown out their neighbors router signal. (router wars)

so idk if this permenantly fixed my problem but it certainly has certainly fixed it for now. it seems that my extremely slow download speeds and drops to 0 had to do something with my SD card. idk if its a bug or if maybe the downloads were slow to the SD card could keep up, but once i removed it and installed a new hard drive into my laptop, steam games started downloading around 12-15MB/s without dropping anywhere under that speed.

i had been used to using an SD card since i had my surface pro 4 and i switched to my new laptop that happened to have an sd card slot. i had a feeling it was my SD card so thats why i ordered a hard drive

There is the problem a normal low class sd card can't handle speeds over 5 mb/s. You were essentially downloading games to a too slow storage medium.

yeah that's what I was assuming. still confused as to why it just drops to 0 instead of just staying consistently slow. oh well. at least now I can share the info to others with the same problem

This happens when your pc detects that it can't cache the data anymore and waits until the data is processed.
