To cut a long story short, I had an empty slot on my laptop so I bought a 2nd hard drive for it. The extra room will be handy and I was thinking it be nice to re-install windows on it.

Installing / inserting it was the easy part. But now I'm not sure how I.... activate it?... turn it on? Not even sure what the proper term is. How do I get my new hard drive ready so I can use it?

Lenovo laptop
Windows 10 operating system

Hi there redrathking,

So you want to install OS on your new drive right?

If this is the case, you need to make sure the HDD is recognized by BIOS. In case it is, you can take your old HDD out, perform clean OS installation on the new one, put the old HDD back into the system, copy all the data that you need on the new drive, reformat the old HDD, so you can get rid of the OS installation.

If you don't want to install OS on the HDD, you just need to go to Disk Management -> Initialize -> Partition&Format the drive, as the other guys said.

just bot up the laptop with the new drive installed. windows shuld see it and install the drivers. then simply format it and you're good to go.

really should not be any other steps to it. very very unlikely but you may have to enable the slot in the bios but that is extremely unlikely but not 100% impossible.

go to start open up windows administrative tools folder and go to computer management. click it then go to disk management. or type this into run diskmgmt.msc you should see your hard drive just right click it Partition then format
