I would say yes it is possible and it is happening.
Overall manufacturers are trying to reduce costs as much as possible and as a result use cheaper materials, thinner plastics, less solder/glue, whatever.....
Products that may have held up beyond some "normal" level of use will no longer do so. And maybe not hold up under "normal" use. Instructions are filled with warnings or otherwise vague so if something goes wrong or breaks - blame the end user/consumer. (Will concede the cynicism.)
If you every get a chance to look at computer components from any time in the past few years you will see the differences. Wires, plugs, circuit boards, cases, you name it.
Unfortunately the trend is for the worse and not the better.
Goes beyond computers and peripherals. Many products and product lines are going down the same path.....
