Hey everyone,

Recently my motherboard stopped working properly, and I wanted a replacement for it. Only problem is everywhere I look I cannot seem to find a place that sells the Z77 Chipset motherboard.

I don't really mind upgrading my CPU however since boxing day is coming around so I just wanted some insight on what route to take.

Here are my system specs as well:

CPU: i5-3570k
Motherboard: AsRock Extreme Pro-4M
GPU: R9 280X
RAM: 8GB

Solution

general vote for spending money wisely is NOT to get an AMD chip (today).

Depends on what you want from your system.

basically your cpu is so old that it's gonna be difficult to find a reasonably priced replacement. You are also NOT locked to a z77 chip, there are other chipsets compatible with your cpu, and the old chipsets dont need Z in the chipset to be capable of overclock.

EASIEST would be to upgrade. You could also look into used parts, but any new motherboard you find, will be either; not a lot of choices, and expensive.

Hmm,

Okay that does make sense. All the MB's I've seen for this CPU have been ridiculously overpriced. What would be a good upgrade from the 3570k? Would the FX-8350 be decent as well ?

You could go with either an

i5-6500+h110/h170/b150 motherboard+ram

i5-6600k+z170+motherboard+ram

Or you could wait for KABY lake based intel CPU release (which gonna suck to wait if you do not have a working machine).

well, basically looking at about 400$ if doing just a bare min upgrade (this number i think could be cut, all depends on what you really need)

And, don't forget, just because the new CPU are the same "SPEED" or similar to your 3570k, they are much faster.

I actually have the same CPU as you :p but mine's still working, ASUS power!

Kaby lake CPU will also be compatible with the z170 motherboards, which makes this upgrade kinda flexible, because of future upgrades made easier. I'm not sure, but I think today's Skylake are able to be used in next gen z270 motherboards, but need to double check that, not sure if im wrong about that

Alright cool ! I'll probably just wait to see if any deals come up during boxing day or something, in the mean time I guess I won't have a working computer haha.

Thanks for the help however, I appreciate it :)

happy to help :)

if you don't do any INTENSIVE gaming, and just play games as they come, you could just invest in the i5-6500.
