Hello!

i have a pre-built hp compaq with a Pentium e2160 4 gigs of ram i put a gtx 950 ssc that i now realize is overkill and a msi 0A90 mobo anyways i'm doing some light - medium gaming and i would like to know some cpu upgrades because cpu is at 100% load on almost all games

Thank you for any answers!!!

I'd be looking for something in the Xeon or Core 2 Quad families.

This one would do well and is inside your budget. The processor still isn't fantastic, but it will do what you need it to for the time being, and will be better than the pentium.

Thanks

i'm pretty new to computer building and never did a lga 771 to lag 775 mod to a chip but i'm shore i can do it there has to be a first. could you also point me to a good guide to do the mod. i resided to give this pc when i'm don to my older brother because he still uses and old crappy atom laptop that can barley play any games and i would like him to have a good experience so the budget is now 40 and i'm still fine buying used

Thank you!!!

If you get a C2Q, it will work. If you get a Xeon, it's hit of miss if it will work. Not all motherboards are compatible, even with the mod and OEM motherboards are notorious for limited compatibility. I was in your position about a year ago when i did an upgrade to my older computer, but I decided to get the C2Q Q9550 and not worry about any possible issues from compatibility or possibly ruining the socket when cutting it to accept the Xeon. (Yes, you need to cut the CPU socket to accept the Xeon).

Xeon's don't necessarily outperform C2Q's, it depends on what models you are comparing, but Xeon's do tend to be cheaper.

Note: I had an aftermarket motherboard to work with so the possibility of the Xeon working was higher than yours. Plus, I was able to OC the Q9550 to 3.5ghz.
