Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. My system was factory built about 6 years ago, I've replaced a few parts over the years, and I think its finally time I replaced the graphics card and need some advice.

Approx purchase date: A month (after Christmas)

Budget: Up to about £150

Usage: Gaming (Kerbal Space Program, Stellaris, Civilisation, Mass Effect, Skyrim), netflix and youtube, photoshop

Current: AMD Radeon HD 5450 with a Corsair 750W PSU

Other System Specs:
CPU - Intel Core i5-650 @ 3.20 GHz
Motherboard - ixtreme M5800 (I think)
RAM - 7GB DDR3
OS - Win 7 64bit

Parts Website: Amazon.co.uk. UK

Parts preferences: None

Overclocking, SLI, Crossfire: No

Monitor: 1920x1080

I'm currently looking at the AMD RX 460 and Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti but that's only because they're on the November list of best GPUs, so I'm open to others.

Thanks for any help!

I would have to give the nod to a 460. it will play all your games for the cheapest amount of money.

If you are open to used hardware you may want to look on ebay for a 7970. this is faster and a little bit more money. used is always higher perf per $ however also lower perf per Watt

your power supply is WAY overkill.

as a general statement your system is really outdated. the 460 will give it some life and play for another year or two, but in 2019 I would bet you have trouble playing even the simplest of games on low settings. due to the i5 650 being just too slow and the only upgrade it can do is the first gen i7...

I would do the 460 for now but prepare yourself for a new rig.

Thanks for your answer, I'll have a look into the 7970 as well thanks.

Yeah it's a 6ish year old system and I figured I'd be getting a new rig eventually, but if I can squeeze a couple more years out of it I'll be happy!

That psu was a bit of a panic buy last year when my pc stopped booting up (turns out it was just the mobo battery instead...). Are there any downsides to an overkill psu? (Other than the mobo etc, it only powers two hard drives and future gpu. I've only seen comments that it is less efficient its under less load)

no real downsides lol just cost more to purchase upfront.

there is an efficiency curve for power supplies but its within 10% and really irrelevant.

its like if you had a perfectly optimized power supply, say a 600W, you would pull say 320W from the wall when your computer needed 300W. only losing 20W to heat and conversion inefficiencies.

if you had a 1000W and computer only used 300W then your wall draw would be like 330W and its not a big difference.

having a overkill psu would only use a minor amount more power and not cost you much over the year. maybe a nickel haha

I had a 5450 and I played games on it, like Half Life 2, TF2, Crysis(haha)...it was horrible but you do what you have to do. Even a 2gb 460 will change your gaming life. Yes your computer is old but if you can survive gaming on a 5450, you will LOVE the experience you'll get with a real gaming card even on an old computer.

@Vogner12 - haha, that's what I hoped was the worst case!

@dontlistentome - Oh wow, Crysis! Horrible it may be, I've never thought that was even possible on a rig like mine!

Thanks to both of you for your comments, much appreciated. I think I'll be going with the RX 460. There's a Gigabyte branded one going on amazon for about £100 so hopefully that'll do for a couple years until I get a new rig.

I hope I'm not too late but as far as 460's go gigabyte is the only brand I would not go for. look on newegg.com for these brands.

this list is for AMD cards

XFX is the best imo
Saphire is a close second
ASUS they have some great cards some not so hot in general positive
finally MSI and powercolor
bottom of the barrel is gigabyte.

gigabyte is the cheapest for a reason. they use low quality power delivery components and cheap out on the coolers. their RX 480 solution in particular is quite bad. these cards use more power, run hotter, and are slower in benchmarks.

if you have to pay $5 to $10 more for a better card I would do so.

also good to note that there is a bios hack for the sapphire and asus 4gb cards to unlock the remaining cores on the P11 die.

Oooh, thanks for the heads up and saving me from myself! Flicking through Newegg I am more leaning towards the XFX 2gb model now, but I'll research it more and make a decision tomorrow.

Thanks for your help again!
