So I'm building my first gaming pc, and was thinking with the release of kabylake later in 2017 should i just go with an intel i3 6100 for now, and then later come back and upgrade when kabylake is released?

Solution
I would wait on Kaby Lake. We are very close. Q1 2017 is likely when the public will get access to them. On Intel's 2016 earnings report, it was shown they were shipping Kaby Lake chips. I wouldn't be surprised if we were only a month or two out, and if you're getting a non overclockable version of a chip, Kaby lake is going to have higher base frequencies.
Even then, you will not see a huge upgrade in performance. If you can only afford the i3-6100, i would recommend saving up until you can get an i5-6500 or maybe even an skylake i7. you could wait, but who knows when they are released for consumers.
