Hey, I got a new case fan for my computer. I installed it but I have a problem. It's spinning at 1800 rpm,. Is this normal for a new fan?

The fan is a Cooler Master 120mm fan.

Is this fan defective? Should I take it back?

Okay, does the fan have four pins or just one? Nearly all fans that have a variable speed use something called PWM, or pulse-with-modulation. Take the time to look it up when you've got a chance...it's pretty cool. The thing is that PWM requires all four pins to be connected. That means if you're plugging a four pin fan into a three pin header it won't work, and the other way round. Coolermaster tends to be a pretty reputable brand, so I don't think it's the fans fault.

It's probably not the fans fault. But the noise for me is unbearable. I think the fan has 3-pins.

The fan running at a constant 2000 rpm just doesn't work for me. My Insignia CPU fan is almost inaudible at around 1000 RPM.

What's strange is I'm able to control the CPU fan speed in the BIOS, but not the case fan speed.

The particular fan is a Cooler Master Sickleflow.

I might just try to get a refund and get a lower RPM fan.
